General grabbers are heavy and they tend to sink. Great off road tires, shitty sand tires

Most races are not held on a beach or in the dunes. It varies terrain from sand to rocks, but starting from a dead stop in sand is usually not required in races

Also mud terrain tires do not work as good as all terrain tires. Look at the Baja AT it does not resemble a mud terrain tire

a lot of race teams fo use the grabbers, because they are sponsored by general. when you have a 800+ HP truck, it's a little different than slapping the heavy ass grabebrs on a tacoma

Its all good. A lot of people tend to think if a race truck uses it, then it must be good. Like Matt said, sometimes you need more of those race truck parts to be able to take full advantage of certain race truck parts

Having driven deep beach and desert arroyo sand for many years I can advise that street or all terrain tires are easier to use than mud tires (less tread is best). The reason is you want to float on top of sand, not dig into it.

3 ply sidewall tires also do not float as well as 2 ply... I have driven All Terrain TAs in sand, and it is less float-able.

If a mud tire or a 3 ply sidewall tire is what you got, then it will just require letting more air out to float as well.

Rugged Trail TAs, Toyo Open Country ATs, Cooper Discoverer ATRs, Pep Boys Dakota ATs, Hankook Dynapro ATms all do well in sand at 15-20 psi.

All Terrain TAs, Cooper Discoverer STTs need to be at 10 psi or under to float as well.

The same sand will change throughout the year based on temperature and humidity. In the winter, I can drive the dry beach sand at full pressure (38 psi Hankooks, 32 psi Rugged Trails), but come back in the summer, and I will need to deflate 50% to float.

Now, here is on New Years Day weekend 2012 in Baja... I was able to drive over the dry sand down to the low tide zone (wet sand)... but the beach is made of small shells and it is hard to float on that...

    IMG_5369_79dc3170f1695d73a2190a595369d3d724c76d1d.jpg

The beach is steep as well, so you see 4 seperate track as the truck drifts sideways a bit while trying to drive straight (38 psi).

Once I take 50% of the air out (to 19 psi), the truck immediately floats on the wet, shell filled sand...

Here see that my foot prints sink deeper in the sand than do my Tacoma tires once deflated (dry sand):

You mean like how people buy a car because it's used in NASCAR when the only thing a NASCAR vehicle has in common with the street version is the name?

Well, here's the deal... if you want to not get stuck, then you BUY a compressor! If you don't want a fast one, then get one the plugs into the cigarette lighter from an auto parts store... In either case, taking 3 minutes per tire or 9 minutes per tire still beats driving flat, or not enjoying sand driving.

The tighter the tread pattern the better, the wider the better and the less sipes the better. Probably why the Baja T/A and dune grappler are pretty solid choices.
