Yes, the true mudders don’t last long. I don’t think I’ve heard one negative word about the BFG AT's, but out of all the tires I’ve looked at, they are the ugliest tire of them all and if they don’t clear well in mud I’m going to have a hard time warming up to them. I got to see them in person the other day, and the tread depth seemed real shallow. I won’t go looking for mud, but with 80 to 100 inches of rain up here in the PNW, mud happens.

so I have a 99 1st gen with about 2 in level and want new tires and rims. could I clear 285/65/18 on -24 or even -12 (rather run -12 cheaper) offsets? or could I get even crazier and run 295/70/18s? I want big tires and rims but little lift and rub.

currently running 265/75/16 with practically no rub. plan on putting bigger leveling just want to know If I need a different tire size and if itll run on the upper control arm

    thank you!

BFG's are good offroad and wear slow. They are poor on wet pavement and downright crappy in slippery conditions. They put up serious rolling resistance and are heavy. I have been running them the past couple of years and will not buy them again. Their design is dated in my opinion. You might find them ugly, but many like their aesthetics as they run a wide tread with a squared shoulder.

You might want to start a thread in the wheel and tires or 1st gen. section to get an answer to this. This isn't the best spot:)

I went into the tire dealer here a couple of days ago, and got some prices for tires I hadn’t already got prices on. The Cooper AT3' in 245/75/16 are $890 and in 265/70/16 are $830. I was surprised the 70's were cheaper than the 75's. I thought they would be more expensive.

As for the BFG T/A KO’s, they turned out to be the most expensive of all the tires I’ve got prices on by at least about $200. Reason being, I guess, is that they are so popular. I do not like the looks in photos, and got to see them in person, and did not like them in person either, and the tread depth was the shallowest of all the tires on my list. I’ve been looking at tires on vehicles everywhere I go, and all the BFG’s I’ve seen just look worn out. I had to take them into consideration just because they are so popular, but the reason for the popularity escapes me.

I’m thinking of starting a thread on the Cooper AT3's as I haven’t found too much about them on the forum.

There are a fair number of guys on TW running the AT3's . You should have no trouble getting feedback. Personally i have never run them, but they appear to have a smart tread design with relatively open circumferential channels. I have noticed that Cooper typically manufactures a deep tread.

After I posted, I did another search for the AT3's and came up with some threads I’ve seen before and some I hadn’t. Seems to be a lot of mixed reviews. Excellent tire, horrible tire. People calling them Poopers instead of Coopers. Seems like tires are just going to be one of those things you have to try yourself to find out what you really think about the tire and how they will work for you on your truck and your driving conditions. I did find a review of the tire (link below) and he even posted a 30k mile followup with photos. About 40% tread gone in 30k miles. I’ve had my current truck for two years four months, and I have 13,500 miles on it, so any tire I buy should last me a while.

Those prices are lower. However, if I look at that site, there are several prices for each size tire. I can’t tell from the website what the differences are. There are 4 prices for the 245/75/16's and two different prices for the 265/70/16's. Even the highest priced tire in each size is still considerably cheaper than the dealer here. However, the dealer here includes installation, free rotation and balancing for the life of the tire in the quote. Obviously, they have to build something into the price to pay for that. I will say it is nice to take your rig into them, they rotate and balance, and you drive off without spending a penny.

I’ll just address the 265/70/16's as that is most likely the way I will go. Local quote $830. Includes installation, rotation and balancing for the life of the tire.

Discounttiredirect $684. (That’s the higher priced tire as I do not know which of all the tires on that site my local guy quoted). It does not include installation, rotation and balancing. That’s a difference of $146.

I printed off the sheets on all 4 245/75/16's and both 265/70/16's and I’ll take them into the local dealer to see if he can tell me which tires he quoted me on and explain more of the details in the tire description in the spec sheets I just printed.

When I take all of that into consideration, I don’t know if the local quote is all that high. What do you think?

Reason for the different prices is the load ranges on the tires.

    245/75r16

    sl 123

    c1 160

    e1 173

    e1 178

    265/70r16

    sl 149

    e1 171

Almost any tire shop will offer a lifetime balance and rotation so if they don't match the price I would get a quote from another. First thing I would ask up front is just cost of mount and balance so you know that right away. Then get your quote on the tires w mount and balance and see if they are such a good deal.

Remember no tax if bought online and if you decide to get some different wheels from discounttiredirect at the same time they will also mount and balance free along with the free shipping.

FWIW, and I know they are a little pricey, but I really like my Duratracs. I don't think they will probably last much more than 40-45K, but I'm impressed with their performance in all conditions, not to mention I like they way they look too. Most of the bad reviews I have seen on them are guys running the "C" load range on bigger trucks. To me they are the best alternative to running a true mudder if your truck sees some mud, but you don't want the noise and short life of a mud tire. Another common complaint with them is difficulty in getting the tires balanced, but I haven't personally experienced this. I bought them through TireRack for $209 a tire (265/70/17) plus shipping. I also bought new wheels at the same time, so TireRack mounted and balanced them for free. I had no issues with them. I will probably buy them again as my next replacement tire.

Unfortunately, I am in a very remote location. Closest tire dealer other than the guy I’ve bought tires from for at least 25+ years is 30 miles away, and after buying truck and car tires from them a few times, I vowed never to by from them again. I always drove in on a smooth riding vehicle and left with a rough riding vehicle, and every time I took them back to complain, they said there was nothing wrong, so I won’t buy tires there. Next opportunity is 80 miles away. I would much rather buy locally. There is no tax in Oregon, so tax doesn’t come into play.

Finding out what they charge to mount and balance and rotation and balance would be easy with a phone call.

I’ve learned a lot about tires in the last few days. However, I tried searching on this forum and almost an hour on Google and know nothing more about “load range” than I did before I started.

What does SL, C1, and E1 mean? I don’t have a clue. After all my searching just now, I think they might be tied to tire ply, but I really do not know. Can you tell me what each of those load ratings mean? This might help me decide on whether they are giving me the quote for the tire I want.

I do believe that the 265/70/16's they quoted me on for $207.50 each is the same tire on directtire for $171. That’s a difference of $36.50 which means I’m paying $36.50 to have each tire installed and balanced, and rotation every 5k miles for the life of the tire, which in my case will be years as I average about 6k miles per year. The cost for rotation and balancing will probably go up during that time, so I am paying for it at todays cost, not the inflated cost of a few years from now. Does this make sense?

c1 and e1 are nothing more than c or e load rating and sl is stand load rating. Below is the specs on that tire and weight.

    245/75r16

sl is standard load capacity which is 2403 on this tire 34lbs

c is a 6 ply w load capacity which is 2205 on this tire 30lb

e is a 10 ply w load capacity which is 3042 on this tire 41lbs

    265/70r16

sl is standard load capacity which is 2469 on this tire 38lbs

    e is a 10ply w load capacity which is 3195 on this tire 48lbs

They actually have some Duratracs in stock, and it just seems to be more of an aggressive tread than I need. Sure, they look cool, but at my age and for my use, I need to stay practical. If I get the Cooper AT3's (on top of the list now) they will look a lot more aggressive than the stock Dunlops that came with the truck at about the same price you paid for your Duratracs.

I can’t remember the last time I spent so much time trying to understand what I need to know while researching a purchase of any kind, and trust me, I research the heck out of most of my purchases. It’s the fun part with all the info that is out there on the Internet these days and I really learn a lot doing it. I come from the days of paper speed memos in the office. It was all done via email by the time I retired.

Thank you very much for that info. That confirms which tires he quoted me on as he did mention them being 10 ply tires.

Are the pound numbers you gave recommended tire pressure?

SL must be 4 ply tires then? If so, that would be a definite no no for me.

Just ordered 4 General Grabber AT2 245/75/16's shipped free. Price was $150.00 each before tax and I found a coupon code (PASS10) for 10% off entire order. Total with tax was $580.00. Average price I was seeing out there was $168.00 each.

    Purchased them from TireBuyer.com

They also have a code up right now for 10% off wheels if looking.
