Just wanting some opinions about either an all terrain or mud terrain tire. A buddy had some mts on his and he loved them and said the wore great cause tacomas are so light. I'm interested in the toyo at's. But kind of also would like mts. Price is a factor as well. If it's helps I do mild offroad. I mostly have sand with some mud but also go up to Georgia an hunt where they got a sticky slick substance called Georgia clay haha!

Goodyear Duratracs or Authoritys. Closest AT to a MT. Authoritys at Wal-mart are $706 for 4 with balance and rotation for 265/75-16.

It depends on the type of wheeling that you do.

AT's are better on rocks, gravel, dirt, ice and pavement.
MT's are better on snow, mud, and sand.

Then, there are guys who are just interested in the bling factor, and want cooler-looking (more agressive) tires and wheels on the truck.

As far as a mud terrain. The Procomp Xterrains i had where the best tire i have run offroad. They were sticky very flexible and tough. They wore pretty poorly however and didn't balance. I have new KM2's they seem to ride awesome on the road and have great mileage reviews. However maybe because they are still new that they are very stiff offroad they don't like to wrap around rocks like my old Xterrains do.

I would never put a tire on my truck that has barbed wire on the side, i think that falls into the blingy tire category that Tan4x4 mentioned. Not only that its almost identicle to the Duratrac in tread design. I have the cooper AT3's and love them in all types of terrain. Mud, snow, ice, sand, whatever it doesnt matter. They run in the $700 range also.

It's the only tire I will run. I have 70,000 on mine with plenty of tread left. That's 25k per year. Mostly highway, some rocky terrain and pulling trucks out at races.

More sand and mud. But lots of pavement. And the bling factor is cool, but I'm trying to make the most out if my prerunner and not get stuck out at the local hangouts. I'm trying to get the most traction for a decent price. I'll be putting a truetrac sometime as well. Lots of options to choose from haha. Oh and I'm probably gonna get 31x10.5x15s. I just hope it don't look to small with the 2.5" lift Im also gettin. I just don't want to regear.

Not a bling factor for me. I know what I've put these tires through and they've done better than any others I've ran.

Do 15" rims clear the calipers? Also, with what I'm getting from this thread, sounds like you'd be better off with some pizza cutters maybe. Have you looked into 255/85s?

he's a first gen. we can run 15" wheels in fact he's probably running them on the factory wheels.

I'd agree that the fierce's are a bit of a bling bling tire. but I've also heard good reviews and the barbed wire isn't too noticeable, not that they affect performance anyway.

OP, if you see more pavement go with an A/T tire. M/T always gives the best off road performance but they wear faster and cost more. if you want a little more bite I'd definitely go with Duratracs. they act very much like M/T and wear very well.

The Goodyear Authoritys for 31x10.50 are $148 a tire. Id give it look for that price. But nothing is gonna make your truck perform like a 4x4.

I put about 50k on two sets of ProComp mud terrains. Great tire. The side walls are only two ply, so they cut easy, but that makes them light! I had 33x12.50R15s both times. I still have these tires laying around as rollers, and spairs. I then switched to 33x12.50R15 KM2s. I really liked them too.. I didnt put but 2-3k on them and sold them a few weeks ago so I could get bigger rims and tires. They wheeled great too. They where bigger than the procomps even though they are marked as the same size. I see A LOT of jeeps rolling KM2. I now have 315/75R16 M/T-R with kevlar- Zero miles.. LOL The reason I went with the MTR over KM2 is solely based on cool looking tread (IMO)... I personally like the aggressive look of an MT over an AT.. But like others have said, you are going to get more miles out of an AT. For me, I dont DD my Tacoma, so mileage is not a big issue..
btw, you can run 31s at stock hight. I would look for 33x10.50.

I know but where I go and what I do I don't need a 4x4/ can't get a 4x4. Everyone is quick to dismiss a prerunner but I know what I can already do on open diff with street tires. The 4.10 rear end helps a lot off road. A truetrac with the duratracs I think are going to do just what I need

I would love 33s but I don't really want to regear and I know if I don't regear my gas mileage is gonna go to hell. I'm already getting 16 on average running 235s street tires. And 33s will cost more

I was getting 17ish with my 98 Tacoma 4x4 on 33's. 16's pretty bad...are you sure nothing's wrong with the truck?

I have Falken Rocky Mountain ATS's. I like them, but I haven't done much offroad.

wow.... when my truck was stock (3rz auto 4x4) it would get 19-22mpg easy... With 33x12.50R15 it was getting 16-18 (18 all highway)If you are really worried about mileage, bigger tires and a lift should not even be on your mind...

    Yeah, I get 18-23mpg (mixed/highway) with my stock height V6 4x4 on 31's. 16mpg on a 2wd with street tires - seems like something's wrong.
