Is it normal for trucks to have a commercial type of ownership? I have read on a forum (http://www.bayarearidersforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3108) "[FONT=verdana, arial, helvetica]Unlike other states that let you register a pickup as a passenger vehicle, or at least have a pickup truck registration class, CA just sticks it to you. You'll pay somewhat elevated fees but that's it. It's not too bad."

is everyones title say commercial as well?

I think if you have a permanent topper on the bed you can make it a passenger.

i asked about that when i bought my truck back in 2001... i was told some story that Commercial allows you to haul stuff in the bed and that you don't have to run the bumpers on it...

    i dunno...

so, commercial title also means you must carry MSDS for any chemicals on board... it includes basics like windex and WD40

you're saying they could basically stick it to anyone with a pickup in CA?

If it makes you feel any better.....
In PA - your truck is registered as a TRUCK and there are different classes based on the gross weight.
    http://www.dmv.state.pa.us/pdotforms/mv_forms/mv-70s.pdf

My 1st Gen 96 tacoma was CLASS I - (under 5,000lb gross weight) $58.50 a year. My 2nd Gen 07 tacoma is CLASS II - (over 5,000lbs by NOT MUCH) $81 a year.

There's something about CLASS I vs CLASS II that allows you to tow more on the roadways. If you get caught towing more than your 'CLASS registration' - You could be fined. I could go thru hoops and headaches to change my truck to CLASS I and save myself $21....but again, If I got caught towing/hauling too much based on my registration, I could get fined.

But look at this.... you are not affected:
    http://www.dmv.ca.gov/commercial/cvra.htm

    Vehicles that are NOT affected

The following commercial motor vehicles are not affected:

Pickups, even though a pickup can operate over 10,000 GVW. Pickups have a maximum unladen weight of 8,000 lbs.
Light-weight trucks and vans if the declared GVW or CGW is 10,000 lbs. or less.
Taxis and rental limousines (which include charter-party carriers operating limousines that pick up and deliver airport passengers) if the declared GVW is 10,000 or less.

NOTE: Weight fees for the above vehicles (not including trailers) will continue to be based on the unladen weight.
