I didn’t know the appropriate group for this, correct me if need be. I have a medium rusted frame 09 taco. I’m interested in who has had both and there personal thoughts.

You will not be dissapointed with 3rd gen. It is better and a more refined truck.

Very nice truck. Not the best trans imo but I’m sure the ovtune fixes that. Great resell value too!

    Trans is tits.

Programming is, however, less than desirable for my personal needs, personally.

I drove buddies 19 off road with AT, and it drove beautiful, and i do not like slushboxes.

I dont understand the complaint with the AT tranny on 19 and up.

Edit: the only reason i said 19s and up is some 16-18 tacos required updates.

Many before and after threads on topic. Most like their 3rd better, some wish they could go back.

Partially depends on how you use the vehicle I think.

Best way to know is to do some extended test drives in a couple different models. Only you can do you, not a bunch of internet strangers. Opinions here are similar to Google and Yelp reviews. You never really know the context it's given in.

    Amen to this!

I had a bought a 2011 SR5 AT brand new, drove it 6 years, and traded it in for my 2017 Sport MT. The 2011 was an AWESOME truck but struggled with towing, while the 2017 is a beast towing but not great running down the interstate.

    I miss the 2011.

A long test drive will be your best course of action before deciding.

I went from a 1st gen tundra, to a second gen Tacoma, now a 3rd gen Tacoma.

first few months of driving it, I regretted my decision.

bought the tune, changed the exhaust completely.

by far the best vehicle I’ve ever owned.

    The 3rd gens are great trucks. I've had a 2008 2nd gen and a 2016 and 2017 3rd gen and I enjoyed them all.

Try to do an extended test drive, on more than one truck if possible. They drive a bit different from the 2nd gen, so try to get some time behind the wheel and get a feel for it. The 3rd gen is definitely more modern and refined and the 2020's got some nice improvements. Definitely worth a look.

    Good luck with the search!

Went from a '13. This '20 Pro has been the best vehicle purchase I've made yet.

    Do an extensive test drive.

3rd Gen MT. Then tune, gears and mods. Perfect.

I had a 2011 TRD Sport and loved it. I now have a 2016 TRD Sport and love it even more. I would prefer to still have the 4.0 liter engine but all of the upgrades in the 3rd Gen are worth the trade-off. If you're ready for a change, go for a test drive. If you like it, go for it.

    Interesting.

I drove MT exclusively for 30+ years before this 2016 AT truck, and I like it. I have driven AT- wife’s, dad’s and rentals over the years, and this AT is discernibly different imo.

I think part of it is the engine braking feature and partly just the way I drive.

Absolutely zero regrets with the manual version, aside from the mods I will eventually do anyway.
