Had an 08 and I had both...2015 for about eight months and now a 2016. The 2015 was not much better than the 08....

Even with the issue I have had with a howl (which is very close to a solution) I would not go back to the 15. Very dated. Same thing with my 08 Vette, Nice car but it was 10 years old technically. I am a tech geek. So the 16 with Premium Tech and JBL was all I wanted . I am dealing with the same with my 12 MX 5 but I don't see $14K more in a new one. The Tacoma cost me $3000 more (plus $3000 in options I did not have on the 15)

This is true, but isn't it the first time Toyota has put this engine in a truck and not a passenger car? Don't get me wrong, I have a '16 tRD Sport, my first Toyota vehicle (die-hard Subaru convert here), love the truck and am very happy. With that said, it will be interesting to see what Toyota does in the future with this engine in the Tacoma. I haven't done a ton of research, have an extensive knowledge of engines, etc., so take what I say with a grain of salt, but it almost seems like the minimal gains in MPG that they claim for the '16 Tacoma's engine are kind of a wash in the real world. To get the power you need to step on the pedal more, which means more fuel used, and at that stage of the engine it's not in the Atkinson cycle anymore, right? Don't get me wrong, for my uses as a daily driver, road tripper, light towing, hauling toys like surfboards, mountain bikes and a dirty dog in the back it's just fine. I've also towed a 3,000lb Uhaul trailer from Denver to San Francisco and the truck performed fine. Done the same trip before towing less weight with a '12 Subaru Outback with a CVT transmission and obviously prefer the Tacoma!

Get the 2016. If this a car you're going to be keeping for 10 years or more get the newer generation. It's been updated in pretty much every facet. Interior is better, technology is better, infotainment is better, NVH is improved, drivetrain, MPG and IMO the styling is much better as well. I wouldn't worry about Toyota and the first year of a new gen. This is an engine they've used before in other vehicles and has been out for a while. Toyota also does more incremental upgrades as opposed to broad sweeping ones. No fancy turbo diesels or 10 speed transmissions. They stick to what they know and what works. Look at it this way, if you bought a 2015 there is a chance you'd think back 2 months from now and say I should've got the 2016. If you got a 2016 you're not going to look back and say that you should bough a 2015. Piece of mind and satisfaction is better than the $2000-$3000 that you might save by getting a 2015.

    welcome!
I have owned both. I had a 2012 DCSB TRD sport and loved it. It was paid off and i really had no complaints. I upgraded to the 2016 DCSB TRD off road because i wanted 4x4 and i was impressed with the upgrades. Only thing i am not thrilled with is the MPG. I am averaging 17 MPH city and less on the hwy. Overall i am happy with my decision. Take your time and get the truck thats best for you. I would recommend you to get 4x4. Even if you think you'll never need it, you will end up wishing you had the option. Good luck:cheers:

get the OR, if you get the 4x4, the differences are great enough especially when wheeling.

Well my 2 cents is just that, and you can toss it out the door if you feel like it.

I loved my 2nd gen. I wouldn't have even strayed from my 2013 had I not wanted to go 4x4, get a legit towing package (mine was just the hitch), and actually had a resolution to the driveline vibration.

I would say if you're getting a good deal on a 2nd gen, go for it, but take into consideration what you're getting with the 2016 before you pull the trigger.

Either way, I HIGHLY doubt you'll regret your decision.

Edit: But those backup cameras tho.

As a viewer here, I do have to somewhat agree with you on the 2nd gen versus the 3rd gen. Their towing package is by far the best tow package of ALL auto manufacturers. If the guy that started this thread buys the 2nd gen, obviously he'll love it and he can always trade up later for a 2016-2017 when they become more avaluable . But if he does buy the 2nd, I hope he doesn't get buyers remorse for not buying up

If it matters at all to you, the 2015 looks just like the 2005, except a slight change to the grill I think. so in 5 years I would assume a 2016 will still look like a 2021.

buying a 2015 you are already buying an outdated looking vehicle(though very nice).

I have driven a 2005 (same as 2015) plenty as my dad owns one, and I now have a 2016. the 2005 is still an awesome truck just doesn't look as modern both inside and out as the 2016.

this may not matter to you at all though, so unless you like all the new technology that the 2016 TRD sport/offroad models have, then you cant go wrong with the 2015 and save some coin.
