Alright guys so lately iv been thinking about buying a 2nd gen. With the nicer interior,Better power and overall newer vehicle im leaning towards that.
All my buddies have new dodges or chevys and im still rocking the 01 Tacoma.
It wouldnt be until Spring that i would buy one. Looking to spend 10-14k ish
so probably an 07-08 would be in my price range. 4l mandatory, 4x4 and not sure about the 6 speed or auto.

BUT i start looking at pictures on this website of done up 1st gens and i start thinking ...should i just put a bit of money into my Tacoma and drive it until it dies....bought it with 180 000kms and have 384 000kms on it now. Have done the basics, plugs wires, alt,pwr steering pump, CV axles. All i need to do is the balljoints and tierods. Runs and shifts good!

Either way i wouldnt sell the 1st gen. If i bought a newer one i would keep this one as a project. But hey if i could drive this bad boy for another year and a half then buy a 2nd gen that would be awesome. Iv never financed a vehicle before so coming up with 14 grand isnt the easiest thing for me. Id hate to have payments....Versus putting maybe a 1000 bux into my tacoma, I can fab almost anything so i was thinking rear tube bumper some Newer seats out of something Might make it feel a bit better.

Sorry for the rant boys but im in a dilemma.
    BTW this is the truck...

you are keeping your first gen anyway so it sounds like its just a matter of when you buy your 2nd gen, not if.

id mod your current ride and save up. when the 3rd gens drop you might can find a better deal?

your first gen looks awesome btw

Would you boost a high mileage motor like this?
And iv been searching some seat swaps. Im thinking im gonna keep it for a while, maybe buy a 2nd gen when i prices come down like truknight said.

What a supercharger kit worth? install somewhat easy?
new ecu needed or what ?

Of course. I have about 177k miles and have the 1st gen trd kit, from what I understand the 1st gens don't require a reflash of the ecu after installation. Really there's nothing to worry about boosting these engines they're near bulletproof.
And no need to switch seats just take off the old cloth and get new covers, unless the seats themselves aren't doing it for you.

arb bumper, 3 inch spacer lift (it needs to go!), 3 inch OME lift,
Honestly, I'd go full sized if you are going to get a newer truck. Either an f150 or tundra. OR since you want to keep your existing truck and buy another why not just buy an econo boxer or a sports car?

I mean if you plan on keeping your truck why not have something that sips gas and is comfortable or something fast and fun.

These trucks sip gas as it is and for another 2-3 grand can get you boost.

I actually have a 93 Toyota GT-four on 18lbs of boost and 350HP so no need for another sports car.

So if i just picked up a TRD supercharger from wherever i could just bolt it on and the ecu would be good to go?
That sounds like a mighty fine idea!
The seats in this truck are toast. Well the drivers side is.

    You got it, pretty much.
So there's the 1st gen trd kit (gray) blower and the newer black blower, they put out the same power just the gray ones are harder to find.
Here's mine and everything you'll need for bolting it up. Nothing more to it, you can also buy the 7th injector kit from URD to help tune the s/c for better reliability.

And here are my seats, just showing you some ideas. These older tacomas can be real clean and nice with the right mods

    thats a nice interior!
So the difference between the 2 chargers is just the color?
What exactly does the 7th injector kit do?
Would that require a tune or anything?
If i could find a Charger for 2 grand this may be doable in the next month.
Im gettin excited boys! I never thought to supercharge it figured it would require an expensive standalone or piggy back and who knows what else. If i can just buy a charger and bolt it on that is pretty much what i am going to do!

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I went from 2nd gen to first, the build quality of the first gens is way better imo, and I couldn't be happier with my decision. I am in the same boat with you though, except I need something for wheeling and beating on, my double cab is too nice for that and is my daily driver so it needs to be babied. Looking for a first gen 4Runner to mod.

In a few years when I move up some more in my career, I may buy a 3rd gen and give my first gen to my wife so she can dump her god awful Explorer and have something dependable.

    Thanks man.
Well the price difference between the newer and older ones is about $1k I'd say. Really it depends where you find it, you can buy a black one new for like $2400 or so. Stick around on the site and check to see if anyone's selling theirs for a better deal. Check craigslist too, you just never know.
Also it's easier to drain the s/c oil on the black blowers I believe and that's pretty much it.

As you should know the s/c requires 91 octane or above(premium fuel)- the 7th injector kit basically is it's own tune for the s/c. It'll prevent pinging and high rpm lean out, increases torque and hp, and has a 190 LPH fuel pump.
Honestly I think it's a must if you decide to boost but there's nothing wrong with running the s/c without it till you save up ($895) so it ain't a pretty penny.

Oh wow! yep iv pretty much made up my mind. what year explorer?
I had a 02 Sport on 35's that was ok but gutless and horrible on gas. Only had 150k on it and i was scared to drive anywhere far with it. The tacoma has been across Canada and Back without any issues.

    TashcomerTexas...
Which of the chargers are more expensive?
Sorry for all the questions. Iv never built or ran a superchargerd motor. Iv built 2 high HP Turbo 3sgtes (mr2 & gt four)
I never even thought about Changing oil in the charger haha.
What kind of gains can be expected from one of these without the 7th injector kit approx?

No that's alright, trying to help you out here.
The newer black blower is gonna be more expensive but you're gonna have a harder time finding a gray one.
And the oil is usually good for 100k miles so not much worry there. You'll see gains up to 60 hp and 50 lbs ft of torque

Sounds good to me! Any reason why I dont see any intercooler setups on these? Are they not suspect to heatsoak like a turbo setup often is?

Just my .02. You're not gonna have that great of options with 14k. I had to fork out 13k for mine and its a 2006 with 150,000 miles. Granted it is a TRD Off Road but it's really hard to get one down to blue book. Dealers and owners are very obnoxious when it comes to Toyotas.

Yeah no need for one. Almost 2 different animals, the trd kit hence the word kit is made to be all you need to get set up. And then you got separate aftermarket parts that'll add on to the s/c like smaller pulleys for more boost, 7th kit, headers..etc

I had a 97 Tacoma that I loved but a drunk driver totaled it. Bought a 2012 Tacoma & never really warmed up to it so got rid of it & now I have a 98 & I'm happy again. :)
