In all fairness they did answer your question several times. The law is the law is the law. They deem handguns unnecessary, what it seems to me, they call it restricted and don't want them anywhere other than the range or your home. You keep asking about a safety aspect, I don't think that's what this measure is about. It's about not leaving it in a car unattended etc.

Personally I think it's a bit much but I get the point. One of the things they are trying to control is the wrong people getting their hands on guns. They do this in the realm of handguns by saying where you can take it and how it has to get there.

I'm kinda down the middle on "gun control" but at least they recognized it as a problem. We haven't and thus have a society in which it is WAY to easy for the bad guys to get their hands on guns. Which creates a circular argument ... the bad guys have them, the good guys need them, which means more for the bad guys to get.

Agree with it or not, it's an answer.

...handguns are not good for self defense because they are effective (they aren't), ...they are good for self defense because they are compact and can be carried ("bear") easily and/or concealed, so not as to upset the sheep...

...my "guess" about the biggest difference between canada and the usa, is that canada has much less "bad guys", per capita, than the usa... i'd wager that fact alone goes a long way to the difference in violent crime, per capita... ;)

That's the beginning of the circular argument ;) We should have recognized the problem a long time ago and acted then. We just kept escalating the issue by providing more guns. Fuel to the fire.

It's hard to compare stats but this was interesting.

"Canada reported higher rates for three of the four comparable property offences. There were about 30% more break-ins and motor vehicle thefts per capita in Canada than the U.S. in 2000. While Canada has had a higher rate of break-ins since the early 1980s, the motor vehicle theft rate has only surpassed the American rate over the last five years. The arson rate in Canada was 40% higher than in the U.S., while the U.S. reported 11% more thefts per capita than Canada."

    http://web4.uwindsor.ca/users/m/mfc/41-240.nsf/0/10ff8b04ff3a317885256d88005720f6/$FILE/ATT8BNDV/0110185-002-XIE.pdf

Violent crime much higher in the US, property crime higher in Canada. Seems like escalation because of weapons plays a part.

No one, I said that it's an escalation issue. When guns are available at the rate they currently are they will be used more. Seems pretty logical to me.

...actually, when you consider the sheer volume (quantity) of guns owned by citizens in the usa, ...it says quite the opposite... "normalize" the stats by "number of guns" and we should all be getting awards for good behavior... ;) in fact there are more guns owned now than at any other time in us history (and growing), and violent crime is still low (has been slowly decreasing)... and that counts all the "bad apples", the thugs, the psycho killers, etc...

^^^ exactly. The US has a hard time looking at future problems and making decisions that help the greater population. Most of the time decisions are entirley influenced by lobbiests. Everybody is out for themselfs and to make a buck (not that thats worng). We dont have that in Canada. Someone said earlier, "then how do you guys protect yourselfs" The reason we dont need firearms to protect ourself is because we can trust the goverment to do it for us and there is no crime here comared to the US. Also our political system is the reason Canada isnt in the same state as the US. The 2 party system the US has cant pass any proper bills that actually helps the majority of people. Its sad to watch the US getting deeper and deeper into problems because there is still a lot of opertunity out there.

In my opinion, I dont think any new gun laws will have much of a effect for quite some time.

...we don't trust gov't, ...nor criminals...

like i said before, and oz expounded upon, ...we have a much different culture/society/etc (and problems) than canada... canada is a much more monolithic society and seems to get along w/ one another fairly well... (not sure about quebec though...)

...if the anti's arguments were true (they say more guns = more crime), then the meteoric rise in gun ownership in the usa in the last decade, especially the last few years, then violent crime would be up... ....but, ...it's not... we have (way) more guns in the hands of citizens now (more than ever in history, (...100+M gunowners, 350+M guns by conservative estimates), ...and crime (nationwide FBI stats, etc) has shown a trend in crime decreasing over the last decade...

...so in short, ...in the usa: more guns = less crime...

not everyone that supports one form or another of gun control or permitting measures is " anti " gun as you like to pigeonhole them as

The dramatic rise in gun purchases recently could not be measured in any increase or decrease in crime rate for some time , would you not agree
