I say that because why would your government make requirements to divulge all that personal information and then not act on it or even bother to call or check anything out?

I should have left the bi-polar quote out. I don't believe everyone who is bi-polar is a danger to society.

What's your point? Do you believe gun control laws should be equivalent to obtaining a job in the private sector?

Can we get back on topic? We're discussing the specific requirements to obtain a firearm in Canada.

Let's re-focus and not get this thread locked. This goes for me as well.

increased gun ownership in Kennesaw made crime drop over 80% since the law was passed. Kennesaw is an example of more guns less crime

carrying your gun openly in Kennesaw openly stops armed robbery http://www.examiner.com/article/open-carry-deters-armed-robbery-kennesaw

It certainly is OZ, maybe this recent article written by a guy who has lived on both sides of the border will shed some light:

Canadians Just Don't Get Gun Culture:

    http://www.saultstar.com/2013/01/08/canadians-just-dont-get-gun-culture

Excellent quote from the article here, couldn't be more true in my opinion: "Americans know nothing about Canadians, but don’t care; Canadians, on the other hand, think they know everything that makes Americans tick, but often don’t."

This is an interesting quote from the same article

Canadians can fault themselves for not knowing enough about the U.S. in many areas, but its gun culture isn’t one of them.

If we knew enough about it, we might understand it. If we understood it, we might accept it. Then, it would be our problem, too.

From some posting on here , it appears in some States it may be less hassle to buy a gun than apply for a job , lol

I think Oz might have pointed out the gem in this conversation... "Why does it only apply to the US?"
It doesn't apply to just the US. BUt it does in fact only applies to certain parts of the US. It only applies in areas where there is belief in the criminal justice system to keep peace. The gun violence happens because they don't believe in the justice available to them through the local government.

We can expand that answer to include our big cities which is where most of our own gun murders take place. They don't beleive in local justice system so the inverse is true.

So the rule I think everyone might be able to agree on is that:
If society believes in their criminal justice system then more guns = less crime
If society does not believe in their criminal justice system then more guns = More crime.

This is the issue with the gun debate.
On one hand we have densely packed cities with no belief in our criminal justice system but want the goverment to fix everything for them. They don't use the police to enforce any laws. They will not even report they were a witness to a crime.
On the other hand we have the rural areas that know their neighbors and believe in the criminal justice system but don't trust the government to actually fix anything.

If you follow the above rules... the answer is not gun control... it is returning justice to the areas that have lost faith, irregardless of how many guns are there.

No. My point was just because they're asking for said info, it doesn't guarantee it's going to be used. Sorry, thought it was a rather clear point. I'll try better next time, I promise.

Sadly yes, and less people seem to want jobs than guns, especially in the areas where they so badly want guns.

    Backwards.

I disagree with the bi-polar part. If they are medicated and in counseling all should be well, but a bi-polar person off meds and not in counseling is a danger to themselves and possibly others. Most Dr.'s do not recommend a bi-polar person owning a firearm.

...since we are on the topic of canadian gun ownership and law, ...i'd like to know if there is a parallel to (american-style) "castle doctrine" law on the "books" anywhere in canada...
