More of a safety, sportsmanlike issue.

Semi autos, particularly with more than 5-10 round mags, tend to promote more of a "spray and pray" attitude, rather than the more careful "sniper" attitude that the more precise bolt-action rifle fosters.

Accuracy of the bolt action aside, if you are hunting deer and you miss with your first shot, the target is going to bolt. Rapid followup shots from a semi-auto are more likely to produce an injury that is not lethal (or not immediately lethal), resulting in a wasted carcass, and of course it presents a safety issue for other hunters in the area if the hunter loses focus on his backstop.

 

It's not that he'd be chewing up a lot of game, it's that he would be injuring it and it may or may not die somewhere out of reach of recovery... but it would be inhumane to have a shot miss the vital organs.

Where in the US do you need a rifle for bear defense besides Alaska ? I thought there was no grizllies left down mya ?

yes, getting attacked by a bear isn't that big of a possibility, but i will definitely be prepared with a semi automatic weapon if it happens.

Wyoming is an isolated population within Yellowstone.
The Montana population spreads over the entire western part of the state west of the Continental Divide, down to just north of the Bozeman area.

you can hunt varmints; coyote, boar, other critters...with any rifle in OH... year-round, ..except for some variations in what/how you can do during the deer gun/muzzleloader seasons, i believe... even night vision scopes are legal for coyote hunting...

Active IR night-vision is prohibited (starlight amplification is legal), but other than lead restrictions in the Condor zones, it's pretty much open for the most part.
Some areas restrict deer hunting to shotgun with the pellet size less than 1/2 the bore diameter (no slugs, or I suppose, nothing larger than "T" birdshot in a .410)
