Buy a used Honda CB300F for around $2500...it’ll get 75 mpg and cost you almost nothing in maintenance/insurance etc...and they’re a blast to ride!

Whatever you do I would wait until you have some time under your belt at the new gig before making any big decisions like this. Not saying things won't go well but you just never know...most companies have a 3 month probationary period, I would wait until that's over at least.

It makes more long term financial sense to keep what you have now and just buy gas. Selling one vehicle to buy another, and then maybe buying another one down the rpad just sounds like it'll be a mess.

OP, I have always had a 2nd vehicle for the same situation you are in. I find it much cheaper to buy a nice 4cyl beater like a camry or civic for about 2-$3k cash to save miles on the truck which should be your future offroad vehicle. For me, having a beater is nice especially when gas fill ups last more than a week and no worries if theres an expected hail storm.

Running and maintaining 2 vehicles will cost more than 40miles worth of gas 5 days a week.
The initial cost, taxes, registration, insurance, two vehicles worth of tires, two vehicles worth of oil etc.

Selling any vehicle or purchasing another vehicle purely for gas mileage is not a good reason to swap vehicles.

Keep it. It's paid for and problem free. That's worth more than saving some gas with a different vehicle that may also have issues.

Your completely out of your mind. You got your truck for half price and its going to last for a long time. Keep it.

If that 2003 4 dr Camry that I recently sold could talk. That was well worth the $2k I paid for it to save miles and gas on my truck the last 3 yrs. I did so many CL buys with that car and one fill up almost every 2 wks was nice. That car was so spacious and smooth, I stuffed mowers, set of tires, bumpers, furniture, 8ft ladders, pretty much anything I need last minute on the way home from a work commute or long CL pickups when I wasn't in the Tacoma. Now I split my shorter commute between the Tacoma and TJ.
OP, your not going to lose money on the Tacoma and you are in a good financial situation to pay cash for another vehicle. Whatever decision you make is a win-win for you but if you still want to build an offroad vehicle, you are not going to find one cheaper, nicer, and more reliable than the one you already own. IMO, park it, build it, and enjoy it on your off days and drive a work beater. 40-50 miles/day will add up fast in a yr and you also never have to worry about transportation if one vehicle is down. I disagree with the argument of maintenance for 2 vehicles besides additional liability insurance and tags for the beater. You are still doing the same number of oil changes(more for beater/less for Tacoma) and replacing 14" camry tires are alot cheaper.

My vote, keep you low miles reliable truck.

The one you're looking to swap for has recently had ther following work done: new water pump, thermostat, clutch, flywheel, 2 new tires, fluids, and not new but good brakes and bearings. While this sounds good, keep in mind it has 188K miles and will most likely need more in upkeep than your existing truck. You're also going to lose more money for tax, and registration fees. I don't see the saving you hint at in the 4 month window you indicate.

Final thought, if you really are bent on getting a commuter car, do after the 4 months you mentioned. Your truck will likely not depreciate much in that time period.

    Finally some logic.

Guys telling him to buy a second to save on a 40 mile round trip commute, well, just plain ol stupid.

Agree, the extra insurance alone will be more than the extra gas will ever cost him.

No, Tacomas are in high demand still. It is hard to find a Tacoma that you know has been well taken care of. You got lucky, not that many people take good care of their cars. Keep your Tacoma, gas is cheap, you will regret selling for an econobox.

I also have a bike for piling on miles. However, i go out on hour long lunch rides, so i dont save much, but i smile more at work and coworkers are grateful.
