You hit the nail on the head lol it's my daily but I also camp/ride trails with it (so overland). Mods don't drop the value but they also don't increase as much as they should. I would definitely get more money for private sale, i just figured I wouldn't decide on the new truck until it came in and I was able to sit in it and everything so private sale BEFORE it comes in is out of the questions and I'm not sure how long the dealer will hold the new truck for me because private sale could take weeks which is why the easiest route would be the dealership trade in.
And to answer your question: no the lift, wheels, and bumper are not necessity although on the trails, the extra ground clearance, protection up front, and tread on the tires is HUGE but I don't have as much ground clearance as I'd want with a 4" because the DB lift I have drops the differential. I would likely keep everything stock for awhile, maybe buy some offroad cheap steelie wheels, and build it slowly this time around. I would be comfortable putting my truck up for sale at $40k and I'm sure someone would talk me down to $36k or something. Just a lot of variables which is why I can't decide on it until the truck comes in and the prices are final. So all this time in between is trying to decide if I should even consider it

    60 Kmiles.....not even worn.

Take your $9K, invest it over the next 5 years. You'll have more $$ for your future house & land.

The truck will easily run for many more years with simple regular maintenance.

    Think long term.

More advice from an old guy……
After passing the financials……YOU have to really be happy with your purchase, because it’s YOU tab are going to be making the payments……in the first 2 years, you don’t even think about it, BUT it’s in the 3rd and 4 th year where it becomes a chore….

    60k miles on a Tacoma…(300K truck)..that’s a set of tires, plugs, maybe a battery…….

I’m in your spot…….I bought my truck, and thanks to TW, have done a lot of work to make it all pretty and mechanically sound…….the 3rd gen is pretty, and every now and then I’ve found a 2017/2018 TRD Sport with high miles, (so the difference in $ isn’t cost prohibitive), even gone to dealer to look at it and drive it
bUT when I put the 2 trucks side by side, and the $13k difference, I can’t pull the trigger.

your case is a little different because of going from a AC to DC ……

    hope this helps

I get your point, but this is 2021, not 1981. Not only will it last, but if it does break it will be super cheap to replace or bypass.

I will say this. You should definitely consider it. There is no harm and no foul in asking a few dealers to put their best deal on the table and seeing what the numbers tell you. It may be worse than you thought -- in other words, the cost may be well over $10K -- or it might actually be well under $10K when all is said and done. You won't know until hard numbers are a piece of paper. You can always blink and walk and there is nothing wrong with doing that.

The other thing I will say is that as someone who is older, drive the truck you want and the truck that is most comfortable for you! I would feel differently if you were doing something totally irresponsible (such as in debt, no savings, can't afford the truck, the truck is taking up 50% of your monthly income, stuff like that). In reality, a small amount of money over time is not going to radically change your future.

Live a little. Not crazy, mind you, but enjoy your life. The older I get the more I realize comfort matters.

    :)

This is about the only time you’ll ever be able to trade up and not take a massive depreciation hit. Financially this is about the best time to make a decision. The second everything gets back on track you’ll still be paying 38k for that new truck but you won’t get 29k for your trade anymore.

The real question now is do you want to pay $9k just for a DC, locker, and paint job? Do you need it enough to warrant spending $9k? Don’t forget to factor in tax and registration. That’s money you’ll never get back.

I'm not sure the next go around i'd buy another double cab. The box is too short for my 29er and i'm not into tailgate pads. I'm also not into double cab long beds, they look goofy IMO.

I had a close family member pass away at an early age (45 years) so since then, I've been trying to live a little more "calculated risky" so I agree entirely. The old me would just throw away the deal buy now I just wanna do something that's ALMOST fiscally responsible but comfortable

That's ultimately what it comes down to: $9k +/- whatever for paint, cab space, a locker, and no miles. Although, the things I did wrong on my current truck won't be wrong on this one as I start doing things such as the lift, wheels, etc. That's also another reason why now is the only time I would do it because of the crazy market. It'll never be this high again so it'll be a hit but it will be an invested hit. Thinking long term, the new truck might start having problems 5 years later than my current truck (better odds)

PS: the dealer said that taxes for the new truck would be waved if I traded in so that's another $2k

Ha! That dealer wants to make a deal! My advice, go there this weekend and have him / her put pen to paper and definite the exact deal they are talking about. Everything. No hidden charges. Firm out the door numbers.

That will tell you alot ...

Well... that's another issue lol he can't give me hard numbers until the new truck is shipped in 3 months because toyota can't give the price yet. And the dealer will want me to sign my truck away before ever seeing or knowing the price of the new one. Quite a pickle

Right. Every deal has its own challenges.

Do you have another car? You could get a number from Carvana and see what that looks like but best to sit tight. Three months is not a long time. The whole deal doesn't make any sense for you until the cost of the new truck is known. Otherwise, you can't get a picture of the whole deal. That also gives you time to think.

Or, for the purposes of exploration, go down and sit in a Tundra ... :)

Carvana, Vroom, dealerships in the area were all thousands lower than what the Toyota dealer was offering so besides private sale, I'd do the deal there but yeah it's just waiting and thinking. Letting everything stew and get some info from everyone on here so I appreciate your input!

My advice, just enjoy the truck you have. That is if/until a dealership or used car buyer offers a deal you simply can't pass up. Many used cars have gone up in value recently and it isn't stopping anytime soon.

Well that's kind of what this conversation is about. They're basically offering the original price of what I bought it for 30k miles ago and I would be spending money on the extra parts that I absolutely want plus getting to do over the truck how I like. So is this the deal I simply can't pass up? Because I'll never get an opportunity like this: miles go up, years go on, prices go down.

Ps: as China trading opens back up, manufacturers will be forced to move prices back down to compete meaning the whole chip business goes out the window so it should be nothing but down for the used car market as times for new cars get quicker. I could be wrong, just what's expected since the original reason for the market is slowly getting fixed

Yeah the offer they gave you is really good, basically a free 30K miles. Also, I don't know where you're located but I picked up my '20 TRD OR in late '19 for quite a bit more than you said they quoted you, so overall sounds like a great deal. Definitley a good idea to check to see if you can get a better offer elsewhere though (I heard Carvana offers have been ridiculously high). A the end of the day man, these trucks aren't cheap so you want it to be perfect. Everyone on here loves to talk about "its right for my needs" but realistically we'd all be fine with 20 year old tacomas. I upgraded from a '96 X-cab tacoma for really no reason other than how sexy the new trucks looked. I also think the DCSB is way better looking than the AC. So yeah, if you're gonna love it, do it. Does it make financial sense? Likely not. But most of the shit people buy on here doesn't haha.

And the point not to be missed is that your needs are changing. The "enjoy the truck you have" is good advice, absolutely, but the point is that your needs are changing and with more friends on board and road trips you won't be able to enjoy the truck you have as much as you would like. I know there is a lot of debate on this but for me the AC to DC is worth it. Believe me, I had a 2005 AC that I absolutely loved with low miles. Loved that truck. But love the 2020 TRD OR much more for the extra space. For some, I get that it is not that much but for our family it made a huge difference, especially on long drives.

I wouldn't worry about all of these macro factors, such as trading with China, the chip business, etc. Too many moving parts now to predict the future. We can open up trade and solve the chip issues and pent up demand could still lead to inflated car prices, new and/or used. These times are unprecedented and hard to predict one way or another.

Focus on the two things that are driving your deal -- AC to DC and the numbers on the table.

It will all work out ...

I actually had a 1st gen x cab and hated it. Too small and the x cab didn't open like the newer ones suicide doors and it was a great decision. Could I live with my truck now? Yeah I could, I just hate passing up on great deals and I have an opportunity to get EXACTLY what I want.

Sometimes I wish we were in a computer simulator game where the computer told me what I like and if the deal was "average" or "great" lol
