To slow down on an incline should I...

    The brakes are one of the strongest devices on our trucks. I have down shifted on steep downgrade to let the engine keep the speed under control... as you can see by the shifter, Toyota makes it easy to use any one of the 5 gears... aka 5 SPEEDS. ;)

    use your brakes...its much cheaper than buying a whole new transmission...or do both 60 on the brakes and 40 on the tranny

    youll never actually damage the tranny from down shifting. its over revving the engine you need to worry about.

    Depending on where people live, if you use brakes where i live youll warp your rotors and glaze the pads. youll need new brakes every week.

    what makes people think it will do any damage to the tranny.

    it will not hurt the transmission any more than accelerating

    but what im implying is to use the brakes more than down shifting...yes it wont kill the transmission and yes over revving is bad thats why we have brakes primarily to slow us down....and it is cheaper to get new brake pads than anything in the transmission or engine.right?

    Why would it hurt your transmission? That makes no sense to me... I spend the summer in the mountains and follow many people riding the brakes. Seems dangerous to me (brake fade) especially if you are towing or have a lot of weight in the box. Leave the brakes for stopping or an emergency. I am referring to steeper grades, not little hills.

    I just got back from a vacation in the Smokey Mtns. and we had a cabin in the mountains. Following people down the mountain they were always on their brakes. Just drop that baby down to L and let the tranny do its thing.

    No one is talking about downshifting to the point of over revving the engine.

    The manual recommends downshifting. Max 40mph in L, 74mph in 2nd.

    You sir are doing it right, and benefiting from fuel cutoff while engine braking, infinite mpg while you save the brakes.

    In 1st Gens, does the transmission logic prevent a downshift if it will result in overreving the engine? I thought that's one benefit of "Super ECT"?

    Yeah my brother in law showed me how to brake down a hill using my gears....but I'd rather use my brakes for what they are made for

    You say that like the transmission wasn't made for engine braking, it is. and your owners manual describes how, it isn't something wrong.

    Like I said very steep declines transmission in L, I never had to touch brakes and engine never got above 2800 rpm.

    Ok ok, fair enough, I'm aware its a perk of having a manual, but I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it with my truck, guess I should have stated my opinion differently :)
