Does this actually happen? If so what do they normally want? Info on maintenance history, buyback offer for testing, what...?

I've heard of this happening. It depends; their interest in the vehicle could be everything from promotional (sticking it in a museum) to R&D testing. Since most components will have seen a change over the years they would be most interested in fatigue testing of the chassis itself as well as inspections of any original parts still in operation.

 

There’s a cool YouTube video of a million mile tundra, guy was hauling heavy loads with it too. Believe Toyota traded the guy a brand new tundra for it for research. All he related was the alternator and the water pump I’m pretty sure

What Crispchicken9 said is what came to mind when i saw your post. Toyota would possibly show interest to put it in a museum. Probably at or near the 1 mil mark im guessing until they would have interest but your milage is impressive to say the least.

That is great! Not many trucks that can make it to 600K and survive! Now only if my 1999 will make it there...only 250K to go and many, many more years!

I'd also like to know what oil he's running, driving habits, service intervals as well! Does he tow with it? Haul heavy loads? Drive on the interstate 75% of the time or more? Does he rev it or just lug it? Etc., Etc.

That's the problem with a lot of these ultra high mileage vehicles. The info above is very rarely discussed. It's like, "SHAZZAMMMMM!" I got 600 or 500 or 1,000,000 miles and no one knows or discusses why.

The guy with the Tundra and close to 1,000,000 miles was a "courier" or low weight "hotshot" guy which means his truck was on the highway most of the time. That would explain most of his his success.

The guy out in Kalifornia with the Tacoma with, I think, 1,000,000 miles was a courier but that was obviously in stop and go traffic most of the time which could explain his success because of "duty cycle". His truck was always running. Probably only one "dry" start a day until he shut it off at night. Probably never shut it off except for food breaks. Then there is the Kalifornia climate so no cold starts at degrees.

There could be so many variables in longevity like this with an engine.

Hard to get to this point without driving on the highway.

I work 40 miles from the house. That daily commute is part Interstate, part state highway. I live in Augusta, Georgia, so I experience little stop-and-go traffic such as you would find in Atlanta, etc. My morning runs down I-20 are b/w 80 and 85 MPH. My afternoon backroads trek averages about 60 MPH.

For 3/4 of its life, the Taco got 10/30 Pennzoil. I switched to Rotella because of simplicity--I run it in the tractors at the farm.

I tow locally a 22' bay boat. GVW would be around 2500 lbs.

I hunt, so during the weekends the Taco plays in the woods, sometimes in 4wd.

She ocassionally goes on long trips. If you review my limited posts, you'll see this time last year I drove to New Mexico for an elk hunt.

The reason she's made it this far, besides of her sound engineering and solid components, is I do the vast majority of the maintenance. Delighted to report it's been limited. Original alternator, though I replaced the brushes at around 250k miles. I'm on my third power steering pump, third radiator, second carrier bearing, perhaps my fifth timing belt. LBJs have been replaced. Just did the valve cover gaskets for the first time. I change my tranny fluid once yearly, the engine oil around every 5-6,000 miles, gear lube every couple of years.

Yes sir, it does. Thanks for the info. I suspected it has gotten a lot of highway miles. Mine is driven about the same way except only 30 miles round trip every day with most of it interstate. Mine started out on 5-30 Pennzoil for the first 119,00 then I went synthetic with Mobil 1 for 2 changes and then Amsoil Signature 10-30 which I still run.
