To tune, or not to tune? That is the question. Manual transmission.

Definitely. I just hit 45k miles and feels like the tranny is breaking in a bit. Less “crunchy” 1-2, 2-3 shifts.

Same here at 31k miles, 2-3 still has a little crunch sometimes but everything overall has improved with mileage. I guess we get the "dumb" transmission that learns by being heavy handed and shaving metal instead of through the ECU, lol.

It doesn’t just improve throttle response.

    • Smooths out power surge at 3500 RPMs
    • Adds about 20-30% more torque at lower RPMs
    • Same throttle maps for each gear, unlike stock calibration.
    • Definitely a bit more power in mid and high RPMs
    • Same or better MPGs as stock but with more power. (On 91+ octane)
    • Engine starts quicker/better.
All I can think of for now.

    Yes I agree.

I love my Tacoma even more when it was new. She is breaking in real nice.

Hoping to take it to 350k+, got long ways to go!:)

Yeah, I've followed along with plenty of the development, but it sure would be nice to find a tuned MT to "feel" the differences for myself before purchasing. Like I said previously, it's definitely on my radar of things to do in the future, just haven't pulled the trigger yet, and probably won't for awhile.

I really wanted to drive a tuned taco, but Covid stared and it wasn’t a good idea to meet up with a TW member up in Washington.

I ended up flashing my ECU anyway. Surprisingly, because I’m not very computer savvy haha.

But no way I would ever go to stock calibration. It makes the truck sooo much more fun. I also feel like this engine will last longer with a tune, it just runs smoother.

If you want to purchase a DIY kit, we can assist with that too. But the above link will show you where our authorized retailers are and have their information so you can get in touch with them directly.

Yeah, I've got a buddy with the OV tune on 91 octane, echoed much of what is said on here about it being a night and day difference. He's got an AT on 35's and 5.29 gears though, so not even close to an apples to apples comparison to test drive. I'm sure I'll seriously look into a tune down the road, but right now my priorities are roughly:

    1. Install high clearance rear bumper this spring
    2. Lift sometime in the next 1-2 years
    3. New wheels and tires when my current set wears out, change to dedicated snow tires on the OEM wheels for winter
    3. Sound deadening cab and upgrade speaker system
    4. High clearance front bumper
    5. Tune, other misc. things, truck should be pretty close to done at this point (allegedly)

    @Junkhead

I knew you would pick up what I was putting down! lol

You can pick out argumentative people right away. (generalization)

It's like they do not consider any other opinion but their own...no open mind or consideration of others...frustrating if you let it get to you.

I'm glad I understand your replies as well as @Rock Lobster.

There are others who I admire in their replies...but you two stand out. :)

    Nice!

I still really want rear steel bumper, HC won’t work with BSM though :( I would really like to keep it functional so probably just a regular good ol steel bumper will go on eventually.

Otherwise I’m pretty much done. But you and I both know it never will be done, especially if you hang around on here.:D

Last pic shows why I want a steel bumper. I did fix it but even with lightest impact, that left side would just fall apart again.

You can float, accelerate to 2500, get off gas and shift. I can't get 1-2 but all others fall in.
I still don't know what rev matching is.

Nice, so I'm the bad guy because I point out I have yet to have any of the issues the Tune and ADM folks fuss about. Nice going folks.

Not the case at all, not even close.

You didn’t clearly read what I posted, but that’s alright.

Watch how this dude shifts his car at the end of the video. That’s how I rev match 90% of the time unless I screw up. You cannot do that in a Tacoma with a stock clutch accumulator, impossible. Rev matching happens almost instantly.

What you are doing is letting syncros and clutch disc do the work for you and it’s not instant at all. That’s not a perfect rev match at all, that’s just blipping the throttle and slowly letting the clutch out and hoping for the best.

    https://youtu.be/FnXLZg_O1rk

@miamijime, I think you will find this video interesting.

Ok. I told you it’s impossible to rev match perfectly in a stock Tacoma, you said it’s no problem.

Read my post and watch the video I posted in the previous page.

    Have a good one.
