At less than 1K miles, I think I'll live with the truck the way it shifts, popping the shifter from "D" into "S" (which drops it into 4th) when it begins to lug on an incline, and pop the shifter back over to "D" when I crest the hill.

I drive it very conservatively, so off the line response is not that important to me. Neither is confusing behavior when in Cruise (Adaptive or Constant) because I never drive my vehicles with CC on and never will.

Just curious. What impact does the tune have on the Atkinson cycle. I'm under the understanding that these trucks have the Atkinson and the Auto cycle or am I mistaken. Also, is there a change in the cleaning cycle the engine goes into at random times?

In the old vF Tunes Version 1.05b days, there was an FOB (Full Otto 1.05b) tune for the MTs that turned off the Atkinson cycle for anything over idle. It was glorious. I'm not sure where the 2.0 tunes really are with respect to that. They are better by all accounts, but the difference between Base and SFOB (Super Full Otto 1.05b) only feels like increased throttle response to me. In the end with the tune, next to no clutch slip is needed, so that's always a win.

I think you understand that Atkinson is not a cleaning cycle and are asking a separate question there? The PI and DI cleaning cycles are not affected by the tunes, unless a custom tune completely shuts off PI, which can be done. The vF 2.0 Tunes do not do that.

There is a PI cleaning cycle? Doesn’t it happen naturally when PI is on?

I thought it only has DI cleaning cycle on hot idle. From what read there is a slit on the direct injectors and it cleans the carbon off the injectors by spraying gas at higher pressures.

These trucks make very little power at 1500 rpm or below. KD Max tunes keep rpms where they should be to have power when you need and want it. And it improves gas mileage. Win-win.

@tonered Yes 2 separate questions. And thanks for the explanation. I was concerned that the cleaning cycles were turned off. Some folks here that were tuned expressed that they thought the truck was less noisy and idled smooth at a constant RPM leading me to think that the cleaning cycles were turned off.

    You're welcome.

That is just because the stock tune is such crap. LoL! vF worked a lot of magic in the 2.0 Tune files that you can get, or that folks have based their shared tunes on.

I can only speak for myself when it comes to tuning. I bought my truck new in 2018 and earlier this year decided to get the KD Max Pro + tune done. My only regret is that, being a procrastinator, what the hell was I thinking!! I should have done this at my first 5,000 mile tire rotation! It is, by far, the best investment I've done to my vehicle.

OTT is what I’m currently running. Phenomenal difference from factory tune. Just a WAY better driving experience.

Get the OTT and never look back. My tuner said that he will drop back to factory for free if I ever want to, but he’s done hundreds of OTT tunes and said that no one has ever asked to go back to factory, and after getting the tune I believe him.

I have been sitting on the fence for 1 1/2 years about getting my taco tuned after reading all the different comments on the tunes here on TW. Still sitting on the fence wondering is it a waste of money or just a young mens fad with their Taco. I love my Taco it performs well so here I sit on the fence. just saying
