:rolleyes:That's right, I did it. After all the "chit chat", it was no big deal. For those 2nd Generation Tacoma owners this is the way it went down. Step 1, remove the drain plug on the bottom of the pan. Step 2, remove the fill plug at the top of the trans. Step 3, after the trans completely drains (this takes about a good 10 minutes, reinstall the drain plug and torque to 15 inch pounds. Step 4, remove the trans pan, there are 20 bolts and they are 10MM.
Step 5, remove the pan (this was really easy). Step 6, remove the strainer which is held in place with 4, 10MM bolts. Expect to lose some minor amount of fluid when removing the strainer. Step 7, install a new strainer and torque to 84 inch pounds. Prepare the pan by installing a new gasket and torque all pan bolts to 65 inch pounds. All 4 quarts of fluid, and it must be Toyota Type I-IV. I poured 4 quarts into an old empty windshield washer fluid bottle and hand pumped it into the fill plug opening. The pump you can buy at any auto parts store. Torque the fill plug to 29 Foot Pounds. Contrary to what you may have been told, Wix 38050 filter is not correct. I had to rush to O'Riley Auto Parts and purchase a FK 326 which was listed for an 08 Tacoma, even though my Tacoma is an 05 with the 5 speed automatic. Lastly, once everything is buttoned up, start the truck and shift it through all the gears 4 to 6 times. That's it. I have been told some many different things about changing the strainer and fluid, my head was spinning. Now, the X-Runner with the TRD package is somewhat different as trans temperature comes into play but the PreRunner is a "piece of cake." And yes, there are 4 magnets in the pan that must be removed and cleaned. Am I glad I changed fluid and strainer? Oh hell yes!
My truck just touched the 100,000 mile marker. This was the first time the pan was dropped and the strainer changed and the magnets cleaned. I have been taking it to the dealer at 30,000 miles intervals do have a simple drain and fill.

Step two really should be step one...you want to make sure you can get fluid BACK IN before you drain it all out...same goes for ANY drain/fill service

Not really sure why people do this. If anything take it out and clean it. They are metal mesh strainers.
