where do you people come up with this baloney ? engine submerged in water is the #1 and only reason for a snorkel

some racing cars and trucks do use dry air snorkels but for cleaner airflow, not some attempt
    to eliminate dust

snorkels are for breathing air for underwater...submerged

FILTERS are for dry air or dust

Looks like me, and the manufacturers are wrong.

    From ARB's description:

"When you explore the unknown, your air intake becomes incredibly vulnerable to dust and water ingestion. But, when you use the ARB Safari Snorkel, your engine's air intake in relocated from a relatively low and susceptible position under the hood to a much higher and safer location where a constant source of clean, cool and dry air is available."

    From XHD's description:

"Dusty Trails Rides and Deep Water Fordings. Anyone who takes their rig off-road is likely to encounter these conditions. The new Modular XHD Snorkel System from Rugged Ridge relocates the vulnerable stock air intake location to help reduce dust clogged filters and the risk of hydro-locking your engine."

I'll admit that I didn't realize that they were also used for dust.

Those generic descriptions are probably used on all their snorkels. But you cannot take a second gen Tacoma in water up to the intake without destroying the truck and im not talking stained seats. On our Tacoma's the snorkel is for dust.

That wasn't the point. The point was what was the purpose of a snorkel. Looks like it states it pretty clearly.

The purpose of a snorkel depends on your aplication and like I said before primarily for most it's to get intake source higher up and out of the dust. Obviously you need a filter but like my 90-sv kubota with an intake in a dusty place the filters will get full quick and your airflow will be choked quickly.

    well ok

primary reason is water secondary is dust

[if you want to talk about why they were invented for engines in the first place
they were first on submarines, then military vehicles that ford water]

There was literally just an article about what snorkels are primarily for and the answer was dust. A snorkel on our trucks serves no purpose for water, because by the time you reach the intake in the fender, your cab is full and your ECU(along with other electrical items)are fried.

Just ask this guy, who's engine is not hydro locked but truck won't run. Insurance totaled it because he fried the ECU

Just use a K&N filter, it laughs at dust and will supply oxygen down to 20 feet under water.

    So sez the intardnet, somewhere.

If I hook my exhaust pipe to my K&N cold air filter, its like a closed circuit right? No way AT ALL for dust, water or evil minions to get in!

    Origin of snorkel
    German Schnorchel

    First Known Use: 1944

The Snorkel or Schnorchel Was invented by the Dutch and fell into German hands when they invaded. It was invented to enable a submarine to run the diesel engines underwater. So technically he is correct.

    Full Definition of snorkel
    1. 1 : a tube housing air intake and exhaust pipes for a submarine's diesel engine that can be extended above the water's surface so that the engines can be operated while the submarine is submerged

    2. 2 : any of various devices (as for an underwater swimmer) resembling a snorkel in function

Yea, yea, yea. Thing is, "air intake extension" just doesn't sound as good as "snorkel". Here are some examples used in a sentence. "I ripped my air intake extension off in the trees for the third time in as many months". Or this. "Tried to sell my Taco but the dude wouldn't buy it. Said I ruined the fender, ruined the paint, and screwed up the intake by installing my air intake extension". Or maybe this. "All the wheelers except the guys in trexTRD's club laughed at my air intake extension". See what I mean? It just doesn't sound right.

Yes, let's compare the application of a snorkel for a submarine to the application for a truck.

Primary purpose depends on your application. That's why I said for most it's primarily dust but others it's for water. I don't have a snorkel and I'd never buy one unless I had water crossings.

Filters are made to filter but they still get clogged. You can't make something unclog itself or get cleaner air before the filter....wait....unless you got air from a cleaner source by moving the air intake location.

Added extra awesomeness to its original awesomeness.
So can we all agree that it's primary purpose is the primary purpose you choose to use it for? I would bet a lot of people have them for a primary purpose of looks; likely has never seen dust or water.

funny enough I followed a dodge through a mudhole with a stock intake and just my basic spacer lift. went through the hole. water half way up the windshield (thinking wave not long distance) and came out the other side.
I checked the filter later that day and i found it soaked but still working. replaced it and moved to an AFE stage 2 intake so I could put a custom snorkel on later. Better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it. I wonder where the fuse boxes could be moved and what could be done to make the engine more water resistant.
