It is knee deep on the first go around. That, and most all of us are not typically tuners. The crappy stock tune on the 3rd Gen forced the issue.

That said, it is worth the effort to learn and do. OVT / vF is really slick after the first flash or two.

Ok, I will probably do it. Looks like it would be about $800 to get started. I sent them a note, as I wasn't sure what USB version is supported by the cable. I have a newer laptop with USB-C.

Yep. Most all folks see an MPG bump. I'm at about +2mpg, so that cost is paid back in about 5yrs of normal driving (60k).

OVT says USB 2.0. The OVT / Tactrix is USB-A to MiniUSB on the adapter. You can use any USB multiport hooked to your USB-C.

I have a MS Surface with one 3.0 USB-A port that works perfectly.

Be sure to grab TechStream from my signature as that will work with the OVT / Tractrix adapter for TSB flashing and customizations.

Thanks this is helpful. I guess the only thing I need to figure out is my ECU number? I think one video I saw said I have to know this before I can get the tune?

Yes. You need to pull that and send it in to get a REG file and the Tune Pack that you want. If you are not on the latest TSB flash (2016 through 2018 Tacos), you will want to do that first as adding other ECUs can cost money.

Got it. I asked the dealer the time before last if there was a TSB for the transmission sluggishness and they said there wasn't. When I take it back in, I will ask that they update it if it hasn't already. I get annoyed when the dealer acts like TSB's are news to them :)

    What Taco do you have?

The 1st Post here has the latest info that we know about:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/ecu-tsb-update.562550/

The Carista or OBD Fusion Apps or TechStream will tell you the current ECU ID.

In the end, don't worry about the dealer. You can flash it at home.

2018 TRD Pro. So much to learn. I've had this truck a year and haven't clearly learned much :)

Ah! There is an ECU update. 04A61 if you're an AT or 04A71 if you're an MT.

These updates make a big difference and are the basis for the tunes. So, the latest is the bestest.

Yea, I’m in Prairieville, Louisiana (southeast outskirts of Baton Rouge). I have Techstream and OVtune. I am willing to help when needed!
I feel like on the auto transmission trucks, especially 04B04, the beta 2.0’s are the best. I run the 19770 (performance tune), but I saved almost all of the betas for 04b04. I felt like the final 2.0 tunes felt “weak” and more like a better shifting stock tune. But I’ll flash whatever is wanted on their truck.

OP is it better to put the tune on before lift and bigger tires, or wait?

It depends how many times you want to meet up and how long until you get the mods. If it is going to be a while, I would flash to enjoy it.
