I’ve been on the fence for almost a year about installing a Tonneau cover on my truck, mostly because of the cost, but also the aesthetics and the fact that I see lots of people selling them after owning one.

What’s been your experience with a tonneau cover? Did you end up removing it?

If I pull the trigger it’s ptobably going to be a bakflip revolver x4.

Not sure if this helps, but my last Tacoma had one and my current one does not. I gained roughly 1.5 mpg with the cover.

    My 2 cents...

I never had any desire to have a tonneau cover..but the truck came with it when I bought it and I was like, cool, I can just sell it for a decent chunk of $$ and buy something else..but here I am 1 year later with it still. I personally love it...can't imagine not having one anymore. I installed a lock n pop so the bed is locked when the truck is locked..very convenient. Going camping with buddies, I store the more delicate items in my bed when/if it rains and when we leave the camp or go to sleep. I've been enjoying having one. And since mine is the OEM one, just one bolt I can remove it from my bed pretty dang quick if I need to haul a large item.

Any reason for not getting on your new truck?
Thanks! Any reason for not getting it for the new truck?

I bought a Backflip and loved it but ended up getting the OEM cover so I could use a KBVoodoo rack with an RTT on top. If you're getting a new truck I'd order it with the Tonneau so you'll have it, even if you want to switch to something else. Buying it from Toyota afterwards is not an option. I was luck to get mine off a wrecked Taco.

Why is it not an option? Cost?

$700 isn't bad especially considering the compatibility with 3rd party rack options. If you don't get it withe he truck you can find yourself kinda screwed afterwards.

I believe they only come from the port with this option..so you can't add it later.

I have the Undercover ultra flex trifold tonneau because I thought it would be waterproof, but its actually water resistant (what I get for not doing my research). So depends on what you are needing to get out of it I guess. For me, I'm looking for an option where I can transport a load without it getting wet (I live in Seattle), so I should be getting a truck cap. I'm currently looking at the Leer 100xq.

You CAN buy it from Toyota after the fact, however, Toyota direct is $1300, it comes as an add on from the factory during the purchase for $650.

If I can get OEM for $700 from Toyota I would. However, that's not an option :(

The Bakflip was/is a great tonneau but now mine is sitting in the garage collecting dust because it will never work with 3rd party rack options. Would have cost me less had I just gotten the truck with the OEM tonneau. But that's for my use - I really like having a rack over the bed, with the bed secure and dry under a tonneau. There are some other tonneau covers that are compatible with 3rd party racks but they don't work as well as the OEM tonneau, IMO.

When I bought my truck it did not come with one. I contemplated getting one for about a year. Finally, I found an OEM cover on Craigslist and purchased it. I love it. I can store things inside and lock it up with very little moisture getting inside. I have taken the cover off in literally 5 minutes when I needed to. I have zero regrets with the cover.

That's not what my dealer says. $3000+ and they can't quite get all the parts.

    Mine came with one on.

Noticed no MPG difference and I constantly had to take if off because I use my truck bed often.

As dumb as this sounds, having the ability to secure things when you are driving around with passengers in the back seat is a big deal every once in a while.

My dad bought a nice set of tools at a crazy discount at Home Depot, and if I had not had this, I would have had to drive the tools home or risk someone stealing them from an open bed. Made me think of the hundreds of times I had things in the back of the Land Cruiser, or FJ Cruiser that would not fit in my Tacoma if I could not secure them in the bed.

I don't think you need to go all in and buy a $1000 cover, some of the less expensive ones will serve enough of a deterrent if all you are doing is keeping holiday shopping stuff in there while you grab a bite to eat or run an errand etc.

Right, well ask on the forums here. I found a buddy an hour from here that took one off a wrecked new Taco and sold it to me for a steal. I hope you can find the same thing!

I would try another dealer for kicks. I was trying to negotiate a cover for mine when I got it and they told me $1300 if it's not from factory since they can't pull it off another truck that came with one.
