I'm looking for a folding tonneau cover that I can leave on the truck while I haul my mountain bike. Also, I'm not wanting to remove my front wheel every time I haul the bike. I have a bed buddy but I'm not wanting to drill holes in the bed in order to mount it. Anybody have a setup already installed that meets those specs? Also, I do not want a hitch mounted rack. Pics and/or links would be much appreciated.

    image.jpg

I was going to do a folding cover as well but after looking at lots of options I've chosen to do a retractable (Rollbak or Usatruckcovers) cover and install Yakima tracks so I can put my bike mounts on it. I need a full rack system so I can also mount my tandem carrier. I will also put a loadwarrior basket with a spare tire mount on it. Sorry no pictures all the boxes are stacked in the garage waiting for the tuck to arrive.

@eldedo Just purchased one myself for my 2016 DCSB only to find out that my tailgate makes contact with the rack when open, regardless of tile position of the Kuat. Are you experiencing the same thing? This is a deal killer for me and may have to return if there isn't a way to fix this other than a hitch extender :/

I know this is a month old thread but maybe @kevr6 could provide feedback on his setup with his bike rack and tonnaeu. There's a picture on page 5 that shows the cover and bike rack.

I never opened the tailgate with the rack in place, hmmm this is good to know. Maybe put a few spacers to drop the hitch location(if its possible).

hmm, if this becomes a headache for me then perhaps a bed rack is in order.

Does anyone know if the 1upusa rack's tilt position also interferes with the tailgate? Maybe the solution is to just keep the tailgate locked so your buddies don't mess up the truck.

I have to remove the tonneau cover each time I ride. For me it is part of the process that is "using" the truck so I enjoy it. One bolt holds it down outside of the latch system. I have two folding plastic horses to hold it when off the truck. I hate removing the front wheel on my bike also!! Pipeline bike rack solves that issue.

Coolio. I still plan on getting that rack. Taking off my front wheel would be too much of a pain.

Hopefully others will find your setup and feedback helpful. Thanks for sharing.

I have the 1UpUSA single rack and it made contact with the tailgate when folded up. I modified my 1Up by moving the crossbar mounts up about 2 inches, effectively lowing the rack enough to clear the lowered tailgate. This required a bit of Dremel work with a router bit and attachment. I leave the rack on the truck 99% of the time with no issues. 1Up also sells "reverse" side panels that lower the rack but I think it lowers it to much.

Hmm, to fully understand, you're saying the vertical rack position (without bikes) contacts the tailgate? I know 1upusa sells a hitch extender that may remedy this. I just ordered the 2 tray in black. I can probably update the order.

    Nothing yet....im a poor bastard.
i use my friends 1 up a lot (he has a fatbike and his 1 up it spaced for his bike) and it did not make contact with my tailgate...up or down. of course with the 1 up you can slide it in as little or all the way since it is a cinch bolt instead of a thru bolt.

Sorry if I confused you. When folded up in the full vertical position as shown in the picture the lowered tailgate contacted the top of the rack. I have the single rack 1Up and leave it on the truck most of time so I wanted to be able to use the tailgate without having to fold the rack down every time or worry about damaging the tailgate. That is why I modified it.

You will be fine using the multi-tray 1Up. In the lowered position without bikes the tailgate should not contact it when it is opened.

    None.
How come you switched to the 1UP? Is that the factory bed cover? I'm trying to figure out a hassle-free way to mount my bike and use the bed cover without taking off the cover or even taking off the front wheel of my bike. The tailgate cover seems good but maybe the 1UP is better. I'm wondering how the 1UP works with the backup sensors and if the tailgate can open without hitting it. Let me know and post pics!

My 1Up is installed 99% of the time. It does mess with the backup sensor, however the backup sensor is redundant to the backup camera anyway and I found the beeps annoying so I have never used it, even when the rack is not installed. The BSM is not affected.

When folded up the rack will make contact with the lowered tailgate so I modified the side panels of the rack so that the rack now sits about 2 inches lower and clears the tailgate by about 1/2 inch. I've used many bike racks and the 1Up is by far the best for ease of loading/unloading and size. It is pricey but will most likely outlast your vehicle.

A tip: If you mostly ride solo then get the 1Up single. If you occasionally take your your buddies get a $150 Hollywood four-bike folding rack as a spare rack. It's much cheaper then spending $200 for the additional one-bike add-on for the 1Up.

I have enjoyed the 1Up. On only one occasion I needed to remove it so I could transport 4 bikes. It was such a pain to transform the truck into the tailgate pad version I'm considering purchasing the double add-on, however for the price I'm still hesitant. You can't hang bikes over the gate and also use the 1Up. I have the Trifecta (I believe) folding cover. It works. I can keep all my gear hidden and keep smells out of the cab. I'm looking into a topper for future use but again its the money issue. The 1Up is fast, convenient, and super stout. I love how secure the bikes are and also how streamlined it looks when folded up because you can leave it pushed all the way in. If you have a lift gate or topper there will be a clearance issue with the handlebars, but you can pull the 1Up out to accommodate.
