How did you modify yours to sit lower? I just installed mine and was bummed that my tailgate hits it when it's folded up. I'm worried my girlfriend or someone will unknowingly drop the tailgate and damage it. Did you just drill holes with a drill or use a drill press? Thanks in advance for helping me. I'm glad there is a solution for such an expensive rack!

Are you able to lower your tailgate with the rack in the mounting position? My tailgate hits the rack in every position besides when it's flipped all the way down.

I thought about that but then there's no access to the bed without removing the bike. I need to get under the cover more often than my grabbing my bike but always want my bike with me. Keep me posted on how that works out. Did you mount a bed rail up there?

Is that an intense? I have one too. Did you have to drill holes in the cover? I want to avoid that. I don't have the factory cover because mine opens from the front too. I wanted full bed access. I'm still considering this setup. But with my job I need access to the tailgate end of the bed and the cab end. I tried finding a way to mount the fork mount to the bed rail behind the cab but there isn't much room.

Also do you have to tie the rear wheel down or does it stay in place?

I really like my Kuat but it does touch the tail gate if you want to open it, shame, I find installing a tail gate pad more work than putting the hitch rack on

its a 1st world problem though and only became an issue when I picked up something heavy and had to lift it into the box rather than sliding it in

Looking for a bed cover that would allow me to fit my bike with the pad without having to remove it. Thanks for the suggestions.

I have looked into this a lot. You can get a roll cover like was posted earlier and mount a rack to the side rails. Truck cover USA probably has the easiest set up as you can get them pre-installed. Though likely could modify other covers and mount thule or yakima tracks. Down side is that the cover storage canister uses up a portion of the bed and is a little more difficult to remove. Also the cost is a little higher.

The next option is a cover of your choice that mounts inside the bed rails. Such as the bak flip. Then mount thule or yakima racks to the bed rails. I considered this but decided that I didn't want to drill in to the side rail of the truck and felt that attaching it only to the rail cover did not seem secure enough.

3rd option. Something like https://mobtownoffroad.com/product/tacoma-bed-bars/ or http://www.summitracks.com with thule or yakima racks attached. These work under covers like tuxedo truxport. This would probably be the cheapest route given the cover is a 3rd the price of some of the others. Might right into problems with water tightness and does use some of your available bed mount space. These also may work with a trifold hard cover like the xtang solid fold 2.0

Just do to cost and not wanting to drill holes I bought the truxsport. I have not mounted any racks yet and am still using my thule rack on the hitch mount. Good luck. I researched this forever, hard to make a decision as with everything in life there were lots of pluses and minuses.

I am going to mount two Thule square bars on the Tonneau with an older set of Thule Tracker II TK14 base mounts. My plan is to just use to mount the ski box for winter. The nice thing about this set up is it is removable and there are caps that cover the mount base, so will not be noticeable when not using.

If strong enough, I will mount Thule bike rrack.

I will post up pics when done.

Done, worked great this weekend. 4 hour drive from to Denver Crested Butte, head wind also.

Same here - love my truckcoversusa setup! The retractable cover, water resistance, security, and utility of this setup is perfect for me!

Do you think a 29er will fit as well as the 27.5?

reviving this, do you still use this setup? I have similar ski racks and looking to mount just like this (I assume you have a channel mount system that you made work for a super low profile attachment?) the problem I have is the amount of road grime that gets on my board and bindings when I put them in the roof. Do you have this problem?
