The OEM soft trifold on mine is great. If I hadn't gotten it from day one I would have gone for an aftermarket roll-up cover for all the reasons you mentioned.

I had the same idea as you - really wanted a retractable as they are slick and I could get bars to put over it and mount bikes on that. I ended up with a trifold because:
price - really expensive, even more when you add the feet and bars for a bike
clearance: I really wanted the option of also putting the bikes in the back with a tailgate pad. The retractable ones still take up a deeper portion of the bed. Too much on a 5' bed. The trifold (think it's a backflip) has a shorter profile when up.

I like it, it's solid so nice to sit on (eating lunch, etc). It is easy and quick. I don't love the total blocking of the window, but when reversing we have a camera and when driving side mirrors, it's never been an issue. And with the money saved I could easily get a really nice hitch rack for bikes, but mostly I just use the tailgate pad which is so fast and easy. I feel it's secure enough, yeah someone could pry it up but out of sight is out of mind. I also added the factory electric tailgate lock (probably my favorite mod- why they don't come this way I'll never know, its only $100 part and a pretty easy install), so when I lock the truck the back is locked, which makes me comfotable leaving random crap in there. The only time I wish I had gone the other route is when I am towing a trailer, it would be nice to have bikes on a rack over the bed, but I have found plenty of work arounds.

I am not sure if anyone has suggested the OEM hard tri-fold cover, but you might consider looking for a used one nearby. Many here do not like them, but count me as a fan as they are built rock solid and I bet you could stand on it and not hurt it. Easy enough to completely remove if needed (one security bolt removed is all that is needed to take it off). I will admit that it is a bit heavy and clunky to remove by yourself, but definitely easy enough to do solo.

The only issue with going with the OEM cover in an aftermarket situation is the requirement to replace the bedside covers on each side.

My understanding is guys usually trade bed caps when buying the cover, but I’m not certain I’d want to put used caps on a brand new truck.

FWIW, this is why I went with the aftermarket option. I didn’t want to drill, cut, or modify my brand new bed in any way.

All true for the OEM cover, but you are not cutting, drilling or modifying the truck bed, just the rail caps. And most owners are more than happy to swap out the bed rails, they just pop off. As far as them being "used rail caps", come on man!

Love my bakflip mx4. I beat the shit out of it and it’s been awesome. It’s also basically theft proof (bar an angle grinder, but at that point nothing stops them) and water tight (if Toyota didn’t just drill holes in the bed floor)

    Following along.
I have a cheap Gator soft trifold. Keeps the water out when it rains, gets wet inside through car washes though.

I have a KB Voodoo bed rack that I ran last year with a CVT tent, I didnt notice any strong vibration or flapping from the cover. This year however, I added a prinsu roof rack to the mix, the cover flaps pretty badly on highway roads. I think I need a better cover, hence the follow to see what others like.

This looks awesome. Would I still be able to use the adapter brackets for bed racks with this cover?

I thought about one of these but I didn’t like the outer material compared the the low pro.

I replaced my “new” 2021 tail lights with the much better looking imho 2017 style. Truck doesn’t look any older.

How has your experience been with the G2 and weather/water, any leaks? I know nothing's going to be watertight but I want something close...

I also am very happy with my Bakflip MX4. When I was looking it came down to the Bakflip and the Diamondback. Ultimately the Bakflip was much more useful for my needs (like when my wife find a large piece of furniture unexpectedly while we’re 50 miles away from home).

I'm looking at the MX4, too. Any issue with leaks?

Not really. If I was going to put a figure on it, I’d say it’s 95% effective in keeping water out. When I installed it I tried to address any areas that might be an issue

I've been through a couple of rain storms (but no monsoons yet), and there are no major leaks.
There was just a small amount of water that entered at the back of the bed.
