I read somewhere that some trucks were coming standard with at tonneau cover? Is this BS?

A factory tonneau cover is avaiable. Bad picture but you can see it there. IMG_8313.jpg

Its optional from the factory. Cannot be dealer installed. At least, not easily.

Not standard included, but you pay for it. Mine has one, and did come installed from factory.

What you probably read was a claim that (supposedly) because of CAFE standards, Toyota ensures a certain percentage of trucks come from the factory with the OEM tonneau option. It's not included for free of course, the option cost is on the sticker as with any other factory or port-install options.

Whether the reason is true or not, there certainly are a fair number of trucks shipping out with the OEM tonneau, which remains a factory-only option AFAIK.

That said, a dealer *can* swap the tonneau from one truck to another if they have the right incentive. Like getting a customer into his ordered truck a month early as happened to me; they found an in-production truck exactly like my order except the tonneau. They got that truck and swapped the tonneau from a truck on their lot, thereby getting their money a month or so earlier than otherwise.

Do you need to know, or care?
Early 2016 Limited came with them standard, but I think they dropped that after running into a shortage of covers about half way through the year. At least in the US, Canada got the running boards, and still do.
