Good morning Tacoma World, hope everyone is having a fine Saturday!

I'd like to get some opinions. I bought a 2008 Tacoma Auto 4x4, Access Cab, Off Road Pkg #1 last week. Started going thru the dif fluids this morning. Rear dif was drained, expected to put about 3 qts back in. Ended up putting about 3 3/4 back in before it started spilling back out.

That's too much based on what I've read.

I put the fill cap back on (Loosely) for now so I can go to run to the store with my wife and let the oil settle a little.

Any thoughts, ideas, concerns? This is pretty straight forward stuff that I've done before (No expert though)

    Thanks for any help!

Sounds right to me. Fill it till it dribbles.
My first gen calls for 2.8 quarts. I did 3 and it still wasnt coming out. Very close however, so I let it ride.

It’s about right. If it worries you turn the truck around 180 degrees in the same place you filled it up and pull the fill plug.

All depends on if you are sitting on a slope facing forwards that could be part of the deal. Not a huge deal for a little overfill. It'll get down the axle tubes to the bearings easier. I did mine the other week think I got a little over 3qt in it IIRC

Last month I changed my F/R differentials. Rear took 3.1qt as was in my owners manual. Was not oozing out. But you could put your finger in filler hole and touch fluid. You'll be fine if it's at top of filler hole. What brand and weight of fluid did you use out of curiosity?

I found that Toyota's differential fluid specs for both the 2nd Gen Tacoma 4.0L and 5th Gen 4Runner are incorrect. As you discovered, the differentials in these vehicles take more than the owners manual specifies. I always fill a diff until it starts coming out the fill hole; then stop.

Thanks everyone. I leveled the truck before starting. Putting in Mobil1 75w90.

What's bad, but great, is the fluid I drained was really clean. I think I got a gem, 115k, frame is great, body great, inside great.

Still going thru it good though. :D

    Again, thanks to everyone!!
