Took my tacoma in for my first oil change with it. First time I have ever gone to a dealer for maintenance. They had a good deal on an oil change/tire rotation and some other stuff.

However, I think they put in too much oil. For some reason they need to do a 10 page RO for this simple stuff. I didnt check it out too hard before I left because it cant be too hard to do something like that. Took a look at it when I got home and under parts it lists

    QTY 7 5W30 TXM @ 3.25

Seems like that means they put 7qts in my 2010 v6 and I cant find anything that says that is proper.

It is pouring down rain outside and I had a hell of a time trying to read the dipstick and couldnt tell where it was at.

Am I crazy or is that too much?

On an RO for oil, Qty= Qts. So 7 would be too much, i would double check the dip stick.

thought of upcharge but it was a set price for the whole maintenance they did so I didnt pay for the extra. maybe they get paid on it either way.

I'll check the dipstick again this evening when the rain stops.

Time to read the stickies on DIY oil changes. Thats what I get for taking a dealer special.

In the meantime, if I that high on oil, whats the fix? Drain and refill?

if you have something to measure with in Qts. I would just drain 2.5qts and recheck the level.

Edit: just realized i screwed up my math. :tinfoilhat: need to stop trying to multi task!

Yeah sounds like they overfilled you by 1.5 Quarts. The only other explanation would be up charging.

If you have the 4.0L six cylinder the oil is 5.5 quarts. They would normally charge for 6 quarts with this engine as they cannot charge for a partial quart.

If you have the 2.7L four cylinder the oil is 6.1 quarts. They would normally charge 7 quarts for this engine as they cannot charge for a partial quart.

If it is over filled take it back and make them eat the cost of a drain and refill. You have the documentation.

If it's overfilled, you could crack the plug and try draining 1.5 quarts, but that's easier said than done.

You paid for the service. You could take it back and make them do it correctly. Or you could chalk it up as a loss and drain the whole thing and refill it with the oil of your choice.

I'm guessing your dipstick will read correct though.

Edit: see the post above mine for better info.

"Well, sometimes they take more" that's best the service manager could come up with when they charged for 11 quarts of gear oil... the rear/front diff and transfer case take a grand total of 6. :annoyed:

Just checked the dipstick again. I was obviously over the full line.

Called the "adviser" on my RO.

"Yeah the guys in the shop just add as much as our computers tell them too" (he wasnt the person I talked to when I dropped it off but he was assigned to it and wasnt in that early. I specifically asked the adviser I talked to before they serviced it how much oil it would take because this damn special had a 5qt max limit and you pay for the rest, I knew it was over that by half a qt. he said its up to 6 on this so model and I dont care about half a qt charge)

"no bud, I asked your counterpart when I gave it to you how much oil and he said up to six so how did toyota change their recommendation between when he said that and the shop"

"oh... can you bring it in now?"

Oh the rage. the rest of the convo didnt go well for him and his manager. There wasnt much to be decided besides refund and drain and refill but I ranted.

Here is the new problem I guess. I have 2 days of 12hr shifts the nexts 2 days so there is no way I can make it there until friday morning.

With 1.5qts extra am I doing any damage with 80 miles? I doubt it. any ideas on that?

If it were my truck I would drain it before driving that 80 miles and skip going back to that dealer.

Im gonna head over to the store and grab some oil. Luckily I can walk to it, just a mile or so away. Dump and fill myself. I dont think I cannot bring myself to have a place do something so easy that they couldnt do the first time. I'll take the refund and just be done with it.

Am I allowed to say what dealer it is on here?

Oh I agree, I'm just new to posting here. Didnt want to break the forum rules.

It was DARCARs Silver Spring, MD. I have had recall work done at their Rockville location and that was great. Should have gone back, but it was closer to home than work on my day off.
