too much oil?

can you put TOO much oil when changing oil? i just changed my oil and pretty much used 6 qts in my v6.. that seems too much to me.


also, if i get oil in the catch from the filter.. is that bad?

 

Yes you can. The oil with froth and loose lubricant value. It can also increase pressure and cause problems with gaskets. Drain some out.

 

Yes. The VVTI is also run using oil pressure so too much oil in there will fuck that up and ruin your mileage among other things.

 

well i have about a 1/4 qt too much.. wont it burn off anyway?

 

+1. Bearings do not like aerated oil. You are actually better off being a LITTLE low on oil, than overfilling it.

 

Have you ran it yet. If so remove the oil filter and replace with a new one. That will get rid of most of it. 5 bucks is cheaper than 3k.

I don't think 1/4 quart is going to cause any problems, but I wouldn't take a chance. Engines are expensive. Oil is cheap.

 

Then just replace the oil filter. You should be close enough then.

If it burns off, you have much bigger problems than overfilling. If oil is burning than its getting past the rings. Which could actually happen when too much pressure is on the system from overfilling....
