I'd still return it. They sold you an unsafe vehicle.

What kind of dealer was this? Independent? Other marquee, Toyota?

How bad is the rest of the truck,I'm guessing real bad. Give ur more pics ,suspension, rear spring hangers ,cross members ect. How much did you pay. I ask because that really the only way to see if it's worth owning. Just because it's a Tacoma doesn't mean it's a good truck.

If they stonewall your return, ask what is the best time of day to catch the owner when you return with a local TV news team. Investigative reporters love this stuff.

If that is the only bad spot get that fixed a decent prime and paint you should be fine as long as your not on the Coast surf fishing all the time.

Quite possible being in Florida the seller never took notice.

    Ask your neighbor what code?

He said he has seen tons of rust in the north and is very familiar with treating it!

Not sure I'll ask him when I see him later today but I've seen his work and it's pretty damn good. He built a custom roll cage for his 1000hp 88 caprice station wagon. And I've seen the custom frame he built for his chevy dually monster truck.

OP is in the middle of the US

Could've bought a completely rust-free vehicle from CA or AZ, decides to buy from the other side of the country with rust and holes in its frame

Just because an item is overpriced, doesn't mean it's actually selling.

I jokingly posted 10-12 different vehicles that someone asked about the other day, with less mileage and immaculate frames with clean titles for less money here in CA than in Arkansas. Those same vehicles in Arkansas were with higher mileage, and some surface rust on their frames (or worse). Not to mention there were less vehicles to choose from as well and asking for more money.

Point is, the assumption that everything is automatically more expensive in CA isn't true. Higher supply here can often lend itself to lower pricing vs that of other states. And if you do pay a bit more for something here in CA, it will come out to be for your benefit as I assure you anyone would prefer a clean, rust-free frame versus one that's been subjected to rust and patched up.

I would look into the return policy, and if you cant, you deal with it NOW and stop the rest. If there is/was enough corrosion to corrode through the frame in that spot, just because you dont "see any" doesnt mean there isnt any already at work. Now, depending on how much you paid, and how much money youre willing to throw at this truck, yeah, anything can be saved with enough $$$. but nope, I wouldnt keep this. Do you have where the dealer said "not much rust issues" in writing? because a rusted hole in a frame definitley is MORE than a little, and any litigator would jump at the chance to use that in court! and maybe you dont want to take it that far, but man, sorry to say you got, how do they say it in Texas? Hornswaggled? yeah...sorry man.

    Ohhhhhhh... Sooo many thoughts.

Like... what did you pay for it? Is it financed? Insured? What variables lead to a good outcome after you've been bent over and screwed, and how likely is it that there is some kind of good out? Some people might just find a ditch if fully insured, others might take it as a life lesson.

There is a legal term that might apply to your purchase, "Expectation of use", and it might be your out IF you weren't buying and shipped and already isolated from the seller. Out of state complicates everything.

Let's use this as a chance to rail at Toyota too. They supposedly have had a policy of "continuous improvement". (From google:)

What is continuous improvement in Toyota?

Kaizen is one of the core principles of The Toyota Production System, a quest for continuous improvement and a single word that sums up Toyota's 'Always a Better Way' slogan.

And yet while they've done wonderful things with drivetrains and technology... they have failed miserably with the most basic component of their most popular truck. They've known about the frame rust problems, even replacing them under warranty when forced, and yet they've continued to use the SAME technology to build frames that THEY KNOW WILL FAIL.

I just stripped the body off of a 1978 Chevy to do a frame swap under an old military truck... and the 45 year old frame is solid.

I think you're screwed Buddy. I hope you find a way out, but it is what it is.
