I broke mine in per the manual -
After 3000 miles I saw a great deal of improvement in gas mileage.
The so-called transmission issues seemed to smooth out too... never was that-bad to begin with.

I figure it this way, if I drove it like a mad-man and the ( so-called ) diabolical transmission problems continued then I
have to question is it the truck?... or is it the way I drove it?...

My Auto transmission is not diabolical.... could be that I broke it in nicely...

Then again I'm not a rich man so I have to take care of my purchases -
This truck will outlast me by a long-shot, my son will inherit a nice ride.

    Nice truck brother!

I can't imagin the cost of shipping if you post them on Ebay but I posted my new take-offs on Craigslist and they sold after three weeks for $800.

As far as the crazy senseless shifting of the transmission which some may claim gets better with time is truly only fixed with a tune. Find a KD Max installer in your area and get it Tuned. It's absolutely night and day!

Congrats on the truck. I also just took delivery of my brand new 2021 OR about a month ago.

Fortunately I don't have the steering wheel issue.

I saw in a comment you're interested in wildpeaks, TRD pro wheels and the TRD pro grill. I opted for the OEM lift kit, which came with the pro grill. 17" pro wheels and 275/70r17 wildpeaks fit nicely. Picture for reference.

I'm also getting terrible gas mileage. I was averaging 14-16 mpg the first 500 miles so I started driving like a granny. Where I live the highway speeds are 80 mph so that didn't help. Now I'm able to get 18-20mpg if I accelerate very slowly, shift around 2000 RPM (manual transmission) and not go faster than 65... But it's painfully boring driving like that. I'm hoping the other comments are true for me where the mpg improves after the first several thousand miles, because it's not realistic to keep driving like this.

FYI - my brother in law is a senior engineer in Toyota for 14 years with a masters in mechanical engineering and a specialisation in reliability engineering. I asked him if I need to follow the break in guidelines and he laughed. He said it would make no noticeable difference to the life of any major component in the truck (or any other modern car) even if you drove it like it was stolen from the first mile. In fact, if you saw how they do the predelivery test you wouldn't care anymore at all about a break in period.

In my exprience of over 10 new cars over a 20 year period, i agree with him and it isnt the first engineer who's told me this either. I have a friend working in BMW and he said the same thing. And another friend in Nissan and he also said the break in period is meaningless.

That's the DRCC Dynamic Radar Cruise Control system doing that...

    Here's a brief explanation

It's diabolically working hard to adjust accordingly. I think you can turn it off--check owner's manual.

Nein fuhrer. The auto upshifts and downshifts randomly with or without cruise on. I drove 650 miles from MI to NC starting at 4pm and going well past 2am. Most of the journey flat road with almost no vehicles around for me miles on end. There is something very poorly programmed with the stock transmission

You should achieve 19 MPG in the winter and 21-plus in the summer unless you are running at elevation or mashing it 75 MPH all the time. There are tricks to maximizing MPG in the Tacoma. One of them is to not use CC since it has weak logic and will downshift and/or unlock the TC at the slightest impedance. I personally feel no need for a tune; perfectly content with my truck after the TSB-0092 flash.

I think a vast majority of people follow the manual on break in, yet lots of complains about the transmission. At this point I think we can all agree the programming is quirky and it bothers some people and it doesn't bother others.

If you are a conservative driver or if you drive on flat roads mostly, it likely isn't that noticeable.

I recently started launching the truck from traffic light stop (with my wife sitting shotgun) and she isn't diggin' it! lol (Launching it & Flooring it are 2 totally different methods of acceleration)

Normal accelerations for me in the past were timid launches...keeping with the flow of traffic. That is, unless I needed to merge into another lane...

I'm at 5800 miles on my Sport and I've had her since May 14, 2021. I think the baby steps of acceleration are done. The DRCC works fine when I'm on Highway 1 Delaware going south to the beach or going north towards Philly.

I never said you had to follow the breakin guidelines. You asked what could be causing terrible gas mileage and I said you leaving cruise control on 99% of the time would be contributing to that.

Also, does anyone know where I can get the Black stealth running boards? I can't seem to find them anymore. They all seem to be out of stock. I'm talking about these ones

I have my black stealth running boards off my ‘18 TRD Sport when I still had it. I took them off the day I took delivery of the truck. Also I just made this account so I apologize for any formatting errors.

Too many jk. There's never too many mods
Anyone who says they're getting 25 mpgs is lying or only dives hwy miles at no more than 55 mph on 2wd acces cab base model tacoma with 50 psi on the tires and the tailgate open while goingd down hill.
I usually average about 19 on both tacomas. I got 32s and a 2 inch lift on one and the other one is basically stock with 265 70 17. If I drive over 65 the numbers fall fast and if do lots of city I'll get 18mpgs. I do have tonneau covers on both though but I don't think it made much of a difference.

My mpg really suffers if I do short stop and go trips. If I get on the freeway I get around 21. Around town short trips around 16.5 to 17

The best I've got in my 16 ORDC on a decent stretch was 28 mpg on an 36 mile trip with the wind behind me running between 45-55 mph. Now, I have 16" Volks that weigh 16 lbs and run Michelin stock sized Defenders that weigh in at 37 lbs new and are at half tread with 40lbs of air.

I consistently get 20-22 with a 50-50 mix of driving. Rolling resistance makes a big difference for sure. I had stock wheels/tires, SCS with 1 size larger Wildpeaks and the current set up above.

Very nice truck, great color, congrats ! The gas mileage is horrible in my opinion, our other two have 800-1000lbs, 2 more cylinders and more than double the horsepower and get better mileage than the Tacoma. It will get a little better once it breaks in, but it is certainly no hybrid. However, these trucks are great/awesome/bulletproof, and the incremental $5 you may pay each time at the pump are well worth it. Congrats and enjoy !

Thank you sir, I am certainly enjoying it coming from a Golf R's jarring ride where i felt every piece of dust on the road. I really wish Toyota put a 3 litre turbo in there though. It feels like I'm driving a sofa in comparison to the Golf

btw anyone have a recommendation for where to buy a TRD pro grill with the TSS? There's loads of them about on the internet but I'm sure they're not all created equally. Maybe this is a question for those of you who swapped yours out, where did you get yours and did you get it with the TSS
