I took my 2015 Tacoma in to dealer to check on engine noise..They got another Tacoma and parked them inside overnight.. The next morning I stopped by at 8am and the service manager, service writer and a mechanic and I started my truck up first..
The noise was heard by all... We then started up the other truck and noise was heard by all, although as noted by them mine was louder...
They said "see" this is normal...So I asked them what was it that was making the noise?
They said they don't know, but it's NORMAL.. 2 days ago I went back and had them start another 2015 truck and it was as quiet as can be..
I do understand a little bit of noise, noise that you hear all the time.. This noise only comes on loud at start up then gets quiter although you can still hear it a bit all day.
Question? I noticed that the oil filter is now on top of motor, could this be a issue?
Seems to me the oil is not getting to top of motor for 3 min for some reason?
Anyway this is my last post about noise... I do have a warranty..
Just very frustrating to hear "this is normal, but we don't know what it is"..

OK, I will ask the question that I may regret later.
Did it sound this way when you bought it?
I does not sound normal to me, in fact, I have never heard a Taco sound like that.

Like the dealer, I don't know what that sound is, but I can tell you that does NOT sound normal! If the truck is new and your current dealer is saying nothing is wrong, take it to another Toyota dealer, I really doubt that is normal.

Filter on top doesn't matter. That was one of the better moves by Toyota. The old ones on the bottom were a major pain in the azz to change. That engine sounds scary. No way would I buy 'normal' That sounds like its down 3 qts of oil!

Not normal. I seriously doubt that they could sell that thing to anyone who heard that noise. I assume that they documented the visit and why and gave you some paper work. If not return and ask for it.

Crawl underneath when it is making the noise. See if the noise originates from the driver side precat.

Mine makes a similar noise on cold start up at idle. I thought the engine had a lower end knock when I first got it, until I found the source.

Just as a note: noises that go away once the engine warms up generally are not bad, its noises that develop as the engine warms up that are bad.

I get the location is better, just maybe it is not working right away being as it is upside down and has no oil in it at start up? Fishing my TW people, just trying to work it out...loud exhaust and music is the fix right now..

One can never have too many light bars.
Was the other truck new as well? Sounds like someone at the dealer didn't use the proper amount of fluids after taking delivery from the factory.

Some progress is good....Thanks for all the posts, now it's time to relax about it...:)

    Not normal.

I was expecting the taco tick but that is something much different, more of a faint grinding or rubbing noise.

Upside down oil filter is no issue. That only means all the oil drains back into the pan at shut off. Fire it up and the oil pump starts pumping oil through the engine then diverted through the filter. It takes very little time to refill and pressurize the whole system. It's a better location than most vehicles I've owned.

I can't believe they are trying to tell you that's normal. That sounds terrible. I hope you get it worked out. I don't think they would like me very much. They would see me every day until it was fixed.

I don't think it sounds normal either. Although not as loud mine makes the same noise. Mine (2015) has been making the noise since it had 100 miles on (now 1600). I took mine to the dealer last week with the same response... Its normal.
