I carry a spare tire that is the correct height, 60" hi lift jack, slider adapter for hi lift, breaker bar and socket, assortment of d-rings, recovery strap, and 12v compressor and co2 tank. That's enough to get me to solid ground where a tow truck can finish the job.

I carry a Black 3 door tool box in the bed of my truck all the time. My trucks previously would break down all the time( 93 dodge dakota, 51 chevy 5 window, 01 s 10 xtreme). My tool box probably weighs 75lbs with all my tools in it. I carry them because you never know when you or a friend might help.

Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.
If you use this on just about any vehicle with tire pressure monitoring sensors you'll damage the sensor.

I'd also toss out the jumper cables in exchange for a battery pack to jump your own vehicle.

my experience is that whenever you use it they need to "rebuild" the sensors. it's like 2 gaskets or so, i've seen the kit at Discount Tire and there's not much to it. but these things should be rebuilt every now and again anyway and it's not a big deal. but i also used these in small cars where maybe a spare or something wasn't an option.

Reading this I'm realizing I'm woefully unprepared...

Question...does a fire extinguisher need to be anchored? Or can I just put it under the rear seat loose with my tie-downs, jumper cables etc

Alright, I have boiled it all down (list wise). A lot will depend on how much of this list I can actually fit in the center consol and under/behind the rear seats because I will NOT leave anything in the floorboard or on a seat. I also don't have locks on the bed storage compartments yet. Bear in mind that I am not including off-road specific items, because off-roading will not be an "everyday" possibility, but a specific event that I can pack extra for.

The list is in no specific order

    Water
Jumper Cables (eventually upgraded to backup pack)
    Knife
    Tow strap
    Screwdrivers (Philips and flat head)
Small socket set (sizes listed above)
    Road flares (2 or 3)
    Flashlight
Fix-a-flat can (later replaced with portable compressor)
    Window hammer/seat belt cutter
    Maps
    First Aid Kit
    TP
    Gloves
    Fire extinguisher
    Ratchet straps
    Ice Scraper
    Quart of oil
    Duct tape
    Electrical tape
    Zip ties
    Shop rags

An unusually high amount of pinstriping.
I would anchor it. Less chance of a flying projectile in an accident. If it's not a big one, you could also just put it in the storage area under the back seat.

My truck often spends a week parked in a lot without me (work), so I won't be leaving anything in the bed.

Well, you don't want it to bounce around in the cab. Pretty dangerous.

I don't anchor mine, its currently behind the passenger seat (double cab) in the storage bin, there's enough other stuff in there that it doesn't rattle around though, the under rear seat storage should be fine too. I wouldn't leave it unanchored in the cabin, where it could become a projectile.

I've always carried one and never personally needed it, but it's the kind of item you don't need until you do, and when you do, nothing else will do.

Threads like this are why my trucks have always had bed boxes.
