I can't let the wife know
Did a search didn't find what I need. I carry a tool box behind my seat and never did mind. Now that my family is growing I need that space. I don't like the idea of having a big tool box on my truck bed. I decided to cut down on the amount of tools I carry on board. Just cant decide what I actually need. I always think of " what if?" .. any one have some input of what tools you carry?

Good idea, but no matter what you have in the box, you'll find yourself needing something that isn't in it when the time comes.

11 in 1 Kein screwdriver, channel locks, razor knife, bottle of super glue, gorilla glue, zip ties, dykes, deathstick demo hammer, socket, wrench set, duct tape, electrical tape, tow straps, tire plug kit, 100' para cord, 8 flares, handful of rags, several pairs of gloves, fixed blade knife, leatherman, first aid kit, (2) litre water bottles, TP, wet wipes, nitrile latex gloves, 1,000 rnds of .22, bottle of tabasco, bottle of Lea & Perrins, can of pepper, bottle of lawyr's seasoned salt, tooth brush and toothpaste, flask of bourbon, head lamp, my 10/22 takedown rifle, glock 19 with 3 extra mags, 2 ratcheting tiedown straps, beach towel, extra pair of flip flops, board shorts, fire extinguisher, 2 cans of the small WD 40 bottles, case of bottled water for drinking regularly.

All this fits in either the rear doors of my ACB, under the front seats or in the bins under the folders, center console or the middle bin in the rear or the front door bins.

You can't really see anything as I have it organized so neatly. It's sometimes a pain but if you put shit back exactly how you have it organized, each and everytime you use something, it stays that way and you know where everything is.

I have a little crescent wrench to take off the antenna when I go through the car wash, a fire extinguisher, some tie down straps, that's about it. I bought a Toyota so I wouldn't have mechanical break downs & therefore don't need tools.
I have a AAA membership just in case, but have only used it for dead batteries.

Something I always carry besides all the stuff already listed is a 20" piece of pipe that will fit over the lug wrench to give leverage to break the nuts loose easier. Also carry a folded up rain poncho that can double as something to lay or sit on.

Frankly your time would be better spent keeping the truck in good shape than carrying a tool box it case it breaks.

You must live in an urban area. I have AAA but try calling them without cell phone reception when your 100 miles from anything remotely resembling civilization. We also have these things called deer and they make bets with each other to see how many vehicles they can take out before dying. Be prepared.

    FIFY :D

No matter how well you take care of a vehicle, they can STILL break down.

The interesting thing here is you (OP) mentioned that you have children, and need the space. This is interesting because when I started having kids, I always made sure to find a way to bring MORE tools. Nothing worse than breaking down when you may be out of cell range, and be stuck needing tools while dealing with a baby or young child. So I would think finding a way to get MORE tools would be the best idea. And when I mean tools, I mean EVERYTHING, not just wrenches and sockets. I know you don't like the idea of a tool box in the bed, but it should be a serious consideration. You should carry extra engine oil, gear oil, transmission fluid, water (can be used short term in the engine without actually having coolant, and is cheaper) and then basic tools to include sockets, wrenches, screwdrivers, several types of pliers, wire cutters, mechanics wire, duct tape, electrical tape (duct tape conducts electricity, so not good to use on bare wire) and do not forget extra sizes and types of fuses. Find out what types you have, and get you several of each.

I agree with the post above. I have 3 small kids and keep a bag filled with tools on the floor in front of the back seat. I keep adding to it all the time.

In addition to the standard tools already mentioned, the one thing I highly recommend is a Gorilla lug wrench. Even though I have AAA, I still wouldn't travel anywhere without it.

I also keep a supply of power bars, an emergency blanket/bivvy, fire starter, compass and similar supplies "just in case."
