That has nothing to do with why these cities are in fact poverty-stricken: Most are former manufacturing centers that have been on a downward spiral for the better part of 30 years. That's the reason here. Not political allegiances. The reason is due to global competition and outsourcing, which by the way is highly supported by Republicans.

Lastly, I grew up in the South where they hardly ever elect Democrats. The vast majority of these areas are far from being wealthy areas themselves. I know because I grew up there.

And to add to this, take a wild guess as to what are the wealthiest cities in the country: Pretty much all of them are areas that vote Democratic.

I'm sure Memphis has to be on that list too. My Aunt lives there and half the city looks like a war zone.

Wake up. Over taxation of corporations by democractic leadership has driven business and prosperity out of these areas and nothing else.

Wrong. Again, these areas mentioned are almost all former manufacturing areas that suffered from poor management at companies like Ford, GM, and Chrysler. They also suffered- as mentioned- by direct competition from foreign manufactures, whom for years have had policies ( Japan, China) that keeps their currencies artificially deflated, which in turn means their cost per vehicle is signifigantly less.

Yes- it would be convenient to blame it all on Democrats. But I'm not buying that one bit because the reasons these areas are faltering is because of global competition and corporate mismanagement.

One thing I would say is to ask yourself what role the labor unions have played in the outsourcing from the large manufacturing cities? I honestly believe that one of the most corrupt segments of our society is that of the labor unions. I believe there was a time when labor unions were necessary because the workers were being taken advantage of but now I believe those unions are costing workers their jobs. How much of the cost of labor paid by manufacturing companies go to the union and not the worker? I honestly have no idea but I would assume that it's significant.

St. Louis is misleading....no one lives there! The vast majority fled to the suburbs over the last 20 years (known as St., Louis County). St. Louis City only has a population of ~400K.

I see this was taken by the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2006 American Community Survey, August 2007. I wonder how much this would change due to the economy now (2009) and all the car factories that have shit down along with everything else?
