Hard to do a top 3, but heres my top 9 seperated by genres (or my definition of):

Godfather - Best Mafia film of all time and possibly the greatest film
Pulp Fiction - Best Tarrantino film and he deserves his own "genre"
Goodfellas - best "modern" day mafia/crime film (sorry Scarface)
The Ten Commandments - Best religious film (admittedly I've yet to see Passion)
The Wizard of Oz - Best film for all ages
Field of Dreams - Best Sports Film
Its a Wonderful Life - Best Holiday Film
Forrest Gump - Best film from the last 20 years and as a bonus it features the best actor of this generation.
    Halloween - Best Horror Film

Its hard for me to put any "comedies" in my top films, but the following are comedies I tend to quote more than any others:
Coming to America, Friday, National Lampoons Christmas Vacation, The Hangover, Wedding Crashers, Old School, Animal House, Caddy Shack, Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore...

Seriously, Avatar is a terrible movie with a tired, predictable plot. I'd have enjoyed it more if it was 2 hours of the animation with trance music playing and no dialog.
