I wouldn't have limited my punching to just one producer

I'd like to point out that Michael Vick still has a job.

Maybe we should start naming the hundreds of other celebrities that have committed heinous crimes that no one seems to care about.

It's amazing that he was able to hold it as long as he did, considering that the tire blew out at almost 300mph.

Damn, BBC TG was my #1 show. I'm with you on the list of shows with the exception of American Dad...haven't really warmed up to it yet.

    Bummer.

I hope the three of them go somewhere else with their own Top Gear.

Maybe that's the problem right there.

Set a precedent that you can do anything you want.....be a total DB.....and then just put on your 'sorry face', and all will be forgiven. It's the American way.

I applaud the BBC for setting a different precedent. I don't watch the show - or know a lot about this character. But from what I've seen in the news recently, it seems he felt he was bigger than the machine that made him rich and famous.

Oh well. I do feel bad for the folks that got entertainment from him - and I'm sorry that your show will likely suck now. But it is refreshing to see a massively ego'd celeb not get his way.

Not that I agree with "Ron Mexico" (Mike Vick) at all but to be fair, he was essentially fired too. He then did his time and then had to prove himself as a valuable enough player to rejoin a team. There was no guarantee that he was going to be rehired.

It's not impossible that the same may happen with Clarkson. They didn't renew his contract but who is to say in a year that the situation won't be revisited? BBC (or any employer) cannot allow something like that to happen without consequences.

Although I love Top Gear, Clarkson was completely wrong and deserved to be canned. In any workplace if you get in a physical fight with someone you should be fired. You can't go around hitting people when you don't get your way, we aren't three year olds and you have to deal with the repercussions when you act like one.

Tilt hit the nail on the head (no pun) in saying that it would set a dangerous precedent if they did nothing. It would basically tell all BBC employees that if you don't get what you want you can freely punch out someone. It would also be telling other employees that if they get into a disagreement, they may be physically harmed.

This isn't Lord of the Flies, it is real adult life.

There's no doubt it was the correct an only just choice. It is just a shame.

BBC Director-General's statement regarding Jeremy Clarkson

    Date: 25.03.2015 Last updated: 25.03.2015 at 14.00
    Category: BBC Two; Factual; Corporate
Tony Hall, the BBC Director-General, has today released the following statement regarding Jeremy Clarkson:

It is with great regret that I have told Jeremy Clarkson today that the BBC will not be renewing his contract. It is not a decision I have taken lightly. I have done so only after a very careful consideration of the facts and after personally meeting both Jeremy and Oisin Tymon.

I am grateful to Ken MacQuarrie for the thorough way he has conducted an investigation of the incident on 4th March. Given the obvious and very genuine public interest in this I am publishing the findings of his report. I take no pleasure in doing so. I am only making them public so people can better understand the background. I know how popular the programme is and I also know that this decision will divide opinion. The main facts are not disputed by those involved.

I want to make three points.
First – The BBC is a broad church. Our strength in many ways lies in that diversity. We need distinctive and different voices but they cannot come at any price. Common to all at the BBC have to be standards of decency and respect. I cannot condone what has happened on this occasion. A member of staff – who is a completely innocent party – took himself to Accident and Emergency after a physical altercation accompanied by sustained and prolonged verbal abuse of an extreme nature. For me a line has been crossed. There cannot be one rule for one and one rule for another dictated by either rank, or public relations and commercial considerations.
Second – This has obviously been difficult for everyone involved but in particular for Oisin. I want to make clear that no blame attaches to him for this incident. He has behaved with huge integrity throughout. As a senior producer at the BBC he will continue to have an important role within the organisation in the future.
Third – Obviously none of us wanted to find ourselves in this position. This decision should in no way detract from the extraordinary contribution that Jeremy Clarkson has made to the BBC. I have always personally been a great fan of his work and Top Gear. Jeremy is a huge talent. He may be leaving the BBC but I am sure he will continue to entertain, challenge and amuse audiences for many years to come.

The BBC must now look to renew Top Gear for 2016. This will be a big challenge and there is no point in pretending otherwise. I have asked Kim Shillinglaw to look at how best we might take this forward over the coming months. I have also asked her to look at how we put out the last programmes in the current series.

The show won't be the same anymore, which is sad because it is the only car show my wife and daughter will actually watch with me. As bad as it is, I agree with sacking him- its not like the producer put him or the others in danger. I could see smacking somebody for something like that, but let's face it, it was over the temperature of food.

Verbal abuse, huh? Oisin and the BBC should try driving a public transit night bus Friday night into Saturday morning. F'n pussies.

I think that is slightly different than a workplace environment and co-worker abuse.

I think the "workplace" where Clarkson and the boys operate is quite a bit different than the workplaces we are all accustom to.

Clarkson wouldn't be the first celebrity to berate and physically attack an underling.

These guys are under an enormous amount of strain. They typically shoot for 12 to 16 hours a day, in all sorts of shitty weather, and all the while they're expected to maintain a smile on their face in front of the camera.

I'm not saying what Jeremy did was right, but THE SHOW MUST GO ON!!!

It sucks so much! I personally think he made the show, Hammond and May have their moments but I always "cheered" for Clarkson in the competitions :pout:
