OK, so a few weeks ago i bought a 99 tacoma SR5 4X4 with 96K miles to replace my 99 TRD with 196K miles.....well im hoping i didnt get scammed.....

I had a 2 week old baby along with my 2 year old and an angry wife at home....so I told the guy to drive it an hour to my house and I would pay him an extra 100 bucks.....

well both babies are crying when he gets to my house....i figured it made the drive no problems and its not over heating....looks good so I only test drove around the block so I could get back home quick and reduce my wifes anger...

I paid him and that was that...
The first time I drove it engine light turns on....its the "bank1" code....
Then the engine starts to ping....ok maybe its carbon deposits because truck sat a long time that why it has low miles....

Today is first time I drive it on the highway.....with my TRD I could go 70 or 80 pulling small trailer and 4 wheeler.....

this one I was doing 69 and I floor the pedal and nothing....seems like it was struggling to do 70 mph with no load other than me....

What could cause that...of the line feels same as TRD or better....

Sorry about the book, just back ground info....

    Thanks

I lost track thousands of dollars ago.
No TRD is only suspension/locker and cosmetic upgrades. What engine is in the truck?

Both V6's? Maybe it just needs a good tune up?

    Intake, exhaust, lift. Typical stuff.
If you had some pinging, your ECU will pull a ton of spark timing. This and proabably a much needed tune up could be why your truck is struggling.

Pull the plugs to see whats going on in each cylinder (diag one cylinder at time): http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/tech_support/spark_plugs/faqs/faqread.asp

More than likely you are pinging in one or more cylinder. This is either from carbon build up or from insuficient fuel delivery (or both).

SEAFOAM your engine, change fuel filter, check fuel injectors and fuel regulator. Make sure the fuel regulator has a secure vaccum fitting connected to your intake.

Also consider cleaning your MAF, changing spark plugs as needed, and changing out your AFR / O2 sensors.

also gears could be different, maybe old truck had lower gears than the new one which put her higher in the powerband on the highway than the new one. What about tire size vs. Previous truck? Like mentioned a good tuneup couldn't hurt and would be a good place to start

    ^^

TRD (with an elocker) had 4.10 gears. The new one might have 3.9x gears.

Also, could be plugged cat or fuel filter?
    Or over-size tires without a re-gear?

Thanks for response....I had mechanic change plugs, wires & air filter, I will change the fuel filter.....hoping its lack of fuel...(maybe thats why "bank1" lean code is showing)

also my old one did have the E-locker so difference in gears could make sense....
Even with the gears this thing should do 90 MPH with no load right?

They are both 3.4s......i will see on the way home today i will get on highway and see if it will hit 75......

If its not the fuel filter......thats going to suck

Can you check for plugged cat or is changing it the only option?
I would like to test it first, a muffler shop should be able to test it right?

Im also going to do the MAF cleaner and seafoam into the intake....i have never done it before but was told it could help with pinging

Right now all i have done is add Lucas fuel additive and the tune up...

Everything sounded fine, it just seemed moving along like i was not pressing on the gas.....revs were not going up....it was just weird....the wire pulling the throttle at engine might not be adjusted.....just because I have it to the floor doesnt mean its pulled all the way under the hood....is that possible or only with carburetors

I have the 3.9 gears and the 3.4 and I cruise at 80 at times but never have tried to see how fast it would go but its not struggling cruise at 80. Ive never done seafoam but when I had my injectors cleaned my truck had quite a bit more pep to it

That's very possible, yes. Did the mech check your plugs?

Ok, well I changed the fuel filter and nothing still bogging down at 50 MPH and would not go above 70 no matter how long i held the pedal down....no hesitation, just no response....

I then took out the MAF and cleaned it pretty good, put it back in and nothing....still the same....

I had never used Seafoam so I was hesitant to do so.....after a couple of youtube videos I decided i would try it.....

one can of seam foam and 15 minutes later she was fixed!!!!!
I could not believe it.....i put some in to the intake vacuum line, then let it sit 15 minutes....i turned it on and reved/smoked the engine for about 3 minutes

I then got it and got on the highway.....i could not believe it.....im doing 85 and still room under the pedal....quick response and the ping/knocking noise at low speeds is also gone.....

I have never been so happy after using a product like that.....pretty cool....Seafoam rules......

What part do you all think was gummed up so bad.....intake valves??

    Thanks

Glad to hear things were resolved. Seafoam is in my near future as well. As far as how fast these trucks can go stock, I've been in double cab (can't remember if it was a 2.7 or 3.4 and no idea what the gearing was) that could handle 120mph. I was a passenger and terrified , as we were on a freeway outside Sacramento at night with a bunch of others on the road.

Sounds like some carbon build up in your combustion chamber was causing you to ping which cause your ECM to pull your timing.

Make sure you are running good gas to keep deposites from forming.

Any old gas that you may have had in the truck...get it burned and get new stuff in there. The new ethanol gas destabilizes far faster than regular gas with no ethanol in it. I wouldn't hesitate to run a bottle on fuel injector cleaner on your next full tank of fuel either.
