Go with the trailer, you use it when you need it. You don't always need a topper but you would never take it off. It does help that you can install a truck top tent on it.

I use my trailer for a different purpose than what you intend to use it for but it's kind of the same. I use my trailer to haul everything for the most part. It is so much easier to load the trailer than it is to load the back of the truck. Plus, my trailer can haul more than my truck. I can haul 2 yards of bark in my trailer without any issue and it is easier to unload out of the trailer.

I am thinking of getting a hard shell canopy instead of the bestop I have now because I want to have lockable storage in the back.

I voted trailer, I think it would be a more versatile option.
You are correct sir, the M101 is wider than the M416 and the M101CDN2. But the canadian M101 is 60"
When I pulled my M416 home I couldn't even see it behind the Taco.

I vote trailer but I'd get a bigger one than the one pictured unless it's just for off roading. I use the truck bed for everything I can and only use the trailer when hauling construction materials too large for the bed (plywood sheets, drywall, studs, etc). A trailer that small still limits the overall size of the items you can carry since it's not much bigger than your truck bed. Your usage may be different though, just my $0.02.

Kijiji actually. Sorry for the Delay, I was off enjoying a week of your higher gas prices and attacking beetles. After thinking about it, and consulting my chief financial officer I'm 90% sure I'm going Bestop. Or Softtop.

Trailer or a hard topper. The soft topper looks great but I hate the lack of security

Yeah, but my Pops in law had a guy at work get his fiberglass topper broken into.

They took a sawzall to it and cut all the connecting bolts straight off. Lifted the damn thing right off the truck. I just want an out of sight out of mind thing for when we go camping.

If they really want to steal my camp stove, they can have it.

    You sound like my supervisor.

Talking to another bloke on our local forum, he has both and he says he just keeps all his camping shit in his trailer year round. So whenever they want to go camping he just hooks up and they fuck off. No packing necessary. I really like that idea.

    750lbs for a trailer isn't that bad.

    Trailer.jpg

This fucking thing was 5300lbs loaded with a full yard of concrete. Taco had no issues pulling it around town. Hills included. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to travel 500-700kms with this fucking thing stapped to the back of me, but a trailer loaded @ 800-850lbs. No worries.

I am going to go out on a limb, and throw up a third option. How about a trailer made from an old Toyota truck? Mine is made from the back half of a 87 Yota, has some amazing springs, and I keep my quad in it. I got tired of the non TSB spring squat with a 300 Sportsman, and when we go hunting or 4-wheeler riding, I just hitch and go. Since the truck will barely fit in the garage, it takes the spot I would normally use for the Taco. It more ground clearance than the Taco, and will go anywhere I want to go. It is the same width as the Taco, pretty much, and doesn't hang up on every stump, tree, and odd TJ that I find on the trail. It depends on your state, but I got permament tags for it. Some will let you register them, some won't. Depends on the state. You could get one CHEAP, and modify the crap out of it.

Not a bad idea actually. Ever weigh that thing? I can't see it being more than 500-600lbs max.

I had to weigh it to get it registered. 980lbs. That is on a certified truck scale. The frame is boxed all the way to the tongue, and it has BFG Mud Terrains on 17" TRD wheels (with spacers, otherwise they rub on the springs), with another on the elevator under the back of the trailer, and a fourth on the tongue to counterbalance the one on the back. If I don't have the one on the front, the tongue is too light, and end up on the back bumper. Had to do something to try and even all this out. Will upload new pics tonight, if it isn't raining (again).

I have both. A Softopper and a 1967 M416. But my M416 is in a hundred pieces in the garage. Hope to one day have the funds up to get that thing finished.

I have a Bestop on mine, a custom rack I bent up that goes over it and my RoofTop Tent attaches to that.

I also have a M101A2 trailer that is being built into a 2 person offroad camper.

My neighbor has a trailer like that painted in the military "sand" color. It looks friggin' awesome. If I ever catch him outside, I'm going to ask him if he's willing to sell it because it's been sitting in the same spot for about 2 years.

I like toppers as well, but I like hard toppers that are painted to match the vehicle.

Actually, the 3/4-ton M101 trailer was originally purchased with & for the M37 3/4-ton cargo truck. Several manufacturers eventually produced the trailer.

The various 1/4-ton trailers (M100 & M416) were purchased for the M38 & M151 series Army Jeeps. These two trailers should tow easily behind a Tacoma. The rated payloads for each are about 500-lbs off-road and 750-lbs highway. Of course, many people have carried much more than that.
