Discovered both inner tie rod boots slid off the steering rack and driver side boot was ripped. Newly installed tie rods and boots about 3 weeks old and spent weekend offroading two weeks ago. Anything to worry about beyond new inner tie rod boots? More details below:

So I installed new inner and outer tie rods (along with hubs, and lbj's) about 3 weeks ago. Shortly after the installation, I spent a weekend offroading at Land Between the Lakes in Western Kentucky. The was a decent amount of mud we drove through.

This morning I went to double check on my inner tie rods (first time replacing them, making there they were still snug against the steering rack), and I discovered (a) both inner tie rod boots had slid off from the steering rack, and (b) my driver side tie rod boot had two horizontal rips each about 1-1.5" long and the zip tie I used to tie it down was gone.

I called a Toyota overstock parts dealer and discovered the Toyota boots I installed were the wrong part numbers. After checking via VIN number I ordered the correct left and right tie rod boots. This has me thinking the boots slid off the steering rack because they were likely too short? (Both tied down to the steering rack with zip ties).

Additionally, I'm thinking the ripped boot was due to it being too short and the stretching from the articulation was too much? Not sure, because I have no idea what would have caused the zip tie to rip off. I can imagine something ripping the tie rod boot from wheeling, or when I was pressure washing the undercarriage afterward (used an automotive tip), but the zip tie is still the puzzling piece.

I got the truck aligned both before and after the wheeling trip (two different shops, first shop didn't do it right). When doing an alignment, they don't touch those boots correct?

So after hearing all this, being that the inner tie rods are so new, is there anything to concerned about beyond replacing the inner tie rod boots?

    Thanks!

This is what I was thinking -- thanks!
