Hey, so I recently purchased a 95 Tacoma with a torn steering boot. right side.

I just got a replacement boot from a Toyota dealership, but it didn't come with anything. No new clamps or grease...

My question is, do i even need grease (I assume yes). And what type??

I stuck my fingers in the tear and theres not much of anything in there. a slight bit of greasiness...but no grease.

Any and all advice on how to go about this repair would be great, including grease type, would be greatly appreciated. Also, is there anything that I should look out for when doing the repair? I assume to clean it out well before i put the new one on?

    Thanks, TT

all you need is the boot and some clamps for both ends. Zip ties also work.

as long as the old boot wasn't really greasy from a leaky rack then you should be fine to just take the old torn boot off and replace with the new one.

you may have to pop the outer tie rod off the lower ball joint in order to slide the new boot on. Try and keep dirt away from the inner tie rod as that is what the boot helps protect and keep clean.

as for the grease, there is none. Just make sure you top off your power steering fluid if needed. While your in there replacing the boot, take a look around where the inner tie rod connects to the rack to see if there are any leaks at the seals. If not then your good to put the new one on and zip tie it down or clamp with the proper clamps if you must.
