So i have a 2004 3.4 4x4 tacoma and last night my trany fluid came on and my check engine light then the tranny temp went up to 300 and i quickly pulled over turned it off and had to tow it home since it was overheating every time i turned it on. It smelled bad like tranny and i checked for leaks and stuff and im getting ready to maybe put a new tranny in from a doner or change my fluid and filter first to see if that fixes my issue. What should i do? The code it threw was for the torque converter but idk my thing is that my gears go in fine it been sluggish in power but idk what do yall think i should do first.

    P0740, P0741 or ?

Either way it points to the solinoid is malfunctioning or the torque convertor clucth (TCC) is slipping. The TCC only actuates above a certain MHP and in either 3 or 4th. If it got that hot the trans is cooked and its lifespan is short. Driving it around will only damage hard parts now, expensive hard parts.

P0741 is the code it threw for a week and then this happened it smelled horrible and i let it cool for a hr and as soon as i would turn it on it rose to 300f so i had it towed. Is there any way to find out of its. Solenoid or torque converter? And should i just swap tranny or install a new torque converter or solenoid? What is my best option ?

More than likley you are going to need a transmission and the system flushed... automatics are apx $1k per speed so expect a $4k bill for a rebuilt tranny and her being a 4X4 more $ because of the tranfer case.

I had a similar problem. Torque converter was not locking up at speed. I first replaced the solenoids. Did not fix the problem. I then got a Sonnax valve body rebuild kit and with the help of some Tacomaworld members, installed that kit. Problem went away. My transmission light only ever came on once, and I pulled over immediately and let it cool down. Transmission shifts fine as ever. Of course that may change tomorrow, but if it does, the rebuild kit still bought me a lot of time.

Is that price your box out, disassembled, inspected and parts replaced or a differernt box swapped in. There are lots of fine tollerance moving bits inside a transmission, I would think a go - no go test would be to see if the tranny fluid has shinny specs in it. One bit of debris bewteen a spool valve and the valve body can ruin your day. For $1500 I expect they will do the minimum in possible, OH kit with fibers and seals and parts spray the valve body to clean it.
