    Hello,
I am removing the 5-speed automatic transmission 4WD from my 2005 Tacoma 4.0 liter V6 motor. I got it separated about 1/2" (out of the pins) but it seems to be stuck. Is it necessary to remove the (6) bolts that attach the torque converter to the drive plate ? Seem like the torque converter should just slide off the tranny input shaft without unbolting it from the drive plate. Am I mistaken ? Seems the only access to those (6) bolts is where the starter came out, and then so by rotating the crankshaft 30 degrees to access each bolt. And then I can fit a 14mm socket on the bolt head, but no room to work a ratchet or a breaker bar. Why can't I just slide the tranny out, leaving the torque converter attached to the drive plate ?

Unbolt the torque converter from the flywheel, remove the transmission and torque converter together.
If there is enough room yes you technically can remove the transmission with the torque converter still bolted to the flywheel. You would need to slide the transmission back another 6-9 inches though and most the fluid in the torque converter will spill on you. You will have to remove the torque converter and install it back in the transmission before reassembly.

Theoretically you can but you risk damaging the transmission, the proper way is to remove the converter bolts and take the converter out with the transmission.
Besides there's no way to re-install it like that.

We only remove the transmission like that when the engine is seized. It always damages the transmission input seal.

Suck it up, unbolt the converter.

It's not that bad if bolts fall they will fall out the bottom of housing where plastic cover is. Good luck!

When you put the new trans in, make sure the black bolt goes in FIRST.
I'd mark the flexplate where that bolt came from too. Because, well....why not?
