    Alright folks FNG here.

I am looking for input. I have 2010' TRD 4x4 w/194k on the clock.

It's paid off... but I am looking at 3rd gens.

Should I spend my hard earned on cash on building my 2nd gen with the mileage being as high as it is?

Or should buy some TW's reasonably built up 3rd gen?

Also, I have a trouble shoot question: At idle, in drive, after decelerating I have lunge/bump about 2-5 seconds after coming to a stop. Anyone have an idea of what the issue may be?

    Thanks,

    Doug Fudge

Are you the first owner? Did you take care of it? You know how its been treated. That’s an advantage over buying somebody’s used stuff.

    Axel wrap. It’s common.

No, I bought it used with a little over a 100k. It was dealer maintained by the original owner until I purchased it. I have meticulously maintained it since, and it still runs really well.

Outside of general maintenance I have a little money invested in it: Fox 2.0 coilovers, 2.0 rears with reservoirs, and well that about it outside of tires and wheels.

    Thank you for your response

    Doug

Axel Wrap, I'll looking into. Should I be overly concerned? Any idea of cost for repair at a shop?

    Thanks

Too many trucks and mods to list.. check builds
Mileage on a Toyota is nothing to be scared of if it’s been even mildly maintained. What does break, can be fixed much cheaper than a newer truck.

Plenty of these 2nd gens running around with 300k miles of abuse. Money saved from purchasing new can certainly make a 2nd gen one hell of a rig

Ask yourself why you are thinking about a 3rd gen. The answer to that may give you the answer you want. I wouldn’t trade my 09 for a third gen.

as for the axel wrap it’s nothing to be concerned about but do a forum search on it to ease your mind.

Alright, I just did a quick google search about axel wrap, and go figure it bought me right back to TW (FNG). Mind at ease..

I am sold. I hate paying the man, and I am minimalist anyway.

Time to crack the piggy bank and make my current taco the girl of my dreams.

    Thanks,

    Doug

Welcome to the forum Doug, my vote is to keep the truck you have.
I bought my 2nd Gen with 174k on it and plan to keep it til the wheels fall off.
Lots of good folks and info here to help you along the way.

    @po35042

    Thank you, sir.

This is my first go at a forum, but I'll sort out the "do's" and "don't" eventually.

And yes, the reason I bought a Tacoma was because of it's long term reliability, but you know how it goes, new(er) and shiny is appealing.

Personally, I’d keep it. But depends what you want and only you know the real answer.

if you want a newer vehicle with wireless charging etc.. then get a new truck one. If you want a truck, keep it. If you want a truck made for people not used to trucks, buy a new one.

sounds like you have a decent set up as is. What do you mean by “build?” What you got will take you where you need to go 90% of the time. Fox shocks all around and tires.. If you want something newer and fancier, than I think you answered your own question.

Your 2nd gen hasnt even reached the breaking in period.

I did a full suspension upgrade around 210K miles (new leaf pack fixed all axle wrap related bump) and I have 0 regrets!

Check the VIN at the dealer and see if the trans program was updated that's supposed to help with that bump and it does kind of. Could also be the AC cycling on/off that bumps the idle up via the ECM control so nothing to do about that. If it does it at every stop turn AC fully off and if it stops that bump of the idle up.

Only you can decide if its time for a new vehicle. We do not know the maintenance history of major items replaced as that would help advise. There are many posts on all the things that members have replaced based on high miles. If you make a list with cost that may help you decide and have the frame checked to see how bad it is as under a TSB for replacement under specific conditions. Many posts on that too so do a search.

I do not want to start another 2 gen vs 3 gen battle but I drove a few and not impressed based on drive and cost so keeping my 09 for now with 165k miles. The new ones have all the same problems the 2 gens did and a few new ones as fuel pumps failing and the engine needs to rev higher to get in the power band and I tow. Why pay to fix all the factory defects again but only you can decide.

If it makes you feel any better at 189k I did everything you see in my sig to my truck. I believe in working with what you have and make it better than what any 3rd gen can offer. You're just getting into another truck payment if you buy something else when you can use that money to build your truck how you want it.

Dude. Definitely keep it. I have 188k. This is what you need to do with your mileage. Get a urd fuel pump kit with the dw fuel pump. The stock fuel pump is crap by our mileage and it'll affect your fuel ratio which will mess with mileage, plug, etc. Next do your water pump, tstat, and any old pulleys. Then finally replace your belts. When my belts were getting stretched and the a/c kicked in there was a hard hit rpm drop. It went away after the belt replacement. At that point you'll be ready for another 100k miles easy. All that will be like 2 days of work and about $1k. That's peanuts compared to financing and monthly payments.

sorry for being "that guy". but my take is - SAVE your money.

there is nothing more satisfying than driving around a paid off truck. i'll go as far to say, keep the mods to a minimum..put the money into a RothIRA or something..let the money do some work for you, instead of doing the work for the bank or someone else you bought the truck from.

now that i am older, i wish someone had kicked me in the ass and told me it is "better to be rich, than to look rich". i am going to drive my boring vanilla 2006 truck a lot lot longer.. i put a huge % of my pay into some savings..i am retiring and cruising thru the last chapters of my life..not worried about money.
