    Hey @Murrayb4,
What is your overall opinion of this new truck? Transmission shifting like doo-doo, new engine makes weird noises that I never heard before...
I like this truck a lot but shifting is just so annoying. If it was shifting even like 2016 Ford Explorer that I drive right now as a rental I would be happiest Tacoma owner on this continent.
Please comment, I would really appreciate your feedback.
    Thanks

Edit: I take that back. Just got my 4Runner back from the shop. I want my Tacoma shift like that!!! Love my 4Runner!!! Made in Japan all the way!!!
Toyota wake up and fix Tacoma before I trade it for another 4Runner!

I like it, it is quite different than the outgoing truck that is is loosely based off of.

The issues are because it's a new engine and trans and new assembly plant.
Tacoma was bulletproof before they switched from Freemont.

When the older 3.5 engine was released, they were known for the valve train falling apart in spectacular fashion. Completely unreliable. I would not suggest anyone buying one. Now we have no issues with them. They're reliable and powerful.

Every new vehicle will have "teething issues".
Yes some can be quite annoying.

The transmission takes a few hundred miles to start shifting properly.
It has 6 gears instead of 5, and the engine has less torque, so it needs to shift a lot more to stay in power. My FJ With bigass heavy tires felt stronger off the line than my Tacoma.

They have some issues that need sorted out.. But they're not bad trucks. There will probably be shift point updates and engine running parameter updates in due time. This stuff can't be updated overnight. It needs to be tested endlessly before they push it to the public.

Am I mad at Toyota for making a new truck with issues? No. I'm not.
It's not what the old one was, but they were forced to make a new engine that has better fuel economy and Cleaner emissions. Especially in a high volume model like the Tacoma.

It's not a bad truck. Give it time to get sorted out. They can't make everything perfect on day one.

Did you ever get something wrong? I sure know I have... I thought I made a mistake.

That only happens if owners file a complaint with NHTSA...

I guess my observation is different here. I feel like the power band produces torque but only in high RPMs and the transmission does not shift to produce power but instead it usually seems OVERLY eager to upshift so as to keep RPMs low, which inherently keeps the truck out of the Torque Producing power band. The resulting effect is the driver gets a dead pedal feeling and/or delayed kickdowns in order to get the power desired. This translates to feeling like you have to floor it to get it moving at times. Most of my complaints are at city driving speeds. I feel that the truck (post TSB) performs and shifts much more favorably on the freeway now especially when using cruise control. The truck also does very well when offroad. Unfortunately most of my driving is around town, and that is where this transmission feels most aggravating.

Note: I seemed to notice that initially after having the ECU flashed the truck stays in gear a bit longer when driving around city, this gives a "50%" ECU feel that many were describing post TSB.

Keep in mind I'm just reporting what I personally observe and "feel" when driving.

Anybody else feel or notice the same?

Thank you very much for very colorful response! :)

My only concern is shifting, and some "interesting" noises from the engine. Otherwise I like this truck.
Hopefully everything will be sorted out by Toyota and it would be the best truck again.

    Thanks again!

On freeway yes in city I feel it's about the same as before. Delayed kick down when driver demands power and upshifts a little too quickly giving a "bogging down" feeling.

This is exactly what I observed with my trans. One thing I noticed that if I drive it more aggressively than it shifting better.
Don't know if that is just my imagination.
I know that ECT button helps with the shifting. But I don't feel like I should be using that to have properly shifting trans.
I'm over 5k on the speedometer and it's still learning, maybe I'm just a bad teacher.

Alsooo, I feel like transmission is shifting a lot better when it's cold.

How many miles have you put on since TSB? I have about 1200 now. Maybe that's part of the difference?

    1. Yes!!!

Most of my driving is also in town.. I rarely get to 50mph.
Post TSB, it's better. But yes, it tries to shift to as high a gear as possible for economy.

I was using ECT Power mode to get the power I need, especially after taking the stock 245's off and replacing them with 265's. It was "fast" before I upgraded.. Now with the air conditioning on, I have to use ECT Power to get the response I feel is adequate. It's got more high end than the old engine and trans.. But i didn't exactly run the old truck at redline all the time. Unfortunately I am an American and I like torque more than power (Despite some of the previous vehicle choices I've made), so this truck seems slightly weak compared to the old 4.0.
I forced myself to run in standard mode for a while and it seems to react much better, but a bit less power than ECT power mode. Still seems to shift too much even in Power mode, they could utilize the engines power a wee bit more.
Again, I think in time toyota can remap the engine tuning for smoothness and response, as well as the auto transmission shift points.
I have worked for toyota for many years, and I know the initial "tune" for an engine and trans is never the final one. The engine clearly makes some power.. It can be programmed to use it.

Power mode is the opposite of all the other models. They all offer ECO mode to limit power and improve economy. This truck starts in Eco and can be switched to "normal"

Slightly wrong, but.. Maybe it's a throwback to the early trucks with their PWR button. Wrong application I believe. It's a truck for America, not the rest of the world. It's a Tacoma, not Hilux.
    Lol

Didn't see it before you cleaned it up, still oddly suspicious, a bunch of new members with the same CPS post as their first post, coincidence, I extremely doubt.

Wait can't be @swimmer said TSB wouldn't impact how the trans shifts when driving...
