Because the insurance companies are going to try and screw (pay the least amount possible) up more than your knee!
What state are you located in?

thing that blows my mind is the other insurance is at fault so using my insurance then they are going after the other for compensation. You’d think they’d do whats better for the customer in this situation.

They'll do what's best for the companies bottom line every time. Given the shop verbally confirmed they don't get paid if it's totaled I would demand they move the vehicle to a body shop of my choice.

Mine was the same way. I had hoped it would work out better that way but it was still a cluster!

Why would you want to have it fixed? Totaled with a full replacement value would be my only settlement. Not to mention the fact that your body will more than likely need therapy for some time. As others have said get a lawyer and don't sign anything now.

I wasn't thinking fraud at all. More that if it was close to being a total that shop is going to do everything in its power to lower the estimate. That's how they get paid right? So a little bit of profit is better than no profit.

Unrelated, but I guess related? The airbags didn't go off because of that bumper install? What would it have taken for the airbags to have gone off?

The shop blatantly saying they will do anything to avoid totaling it is a huge red flag. I would go somewhere else

I have to say it. New vehicles are made of tissue paper thin sheet metal. It keeps the weigh down for all the other comfort they want to add. When will we stop buying trucks that aren't meant to do truck stuff. I have 2 66 F250's and there is no way you could punch them and cause any damage. Punch your Tacoma or Tundra and it will dent. Creature comfort comes at a cost. Back on topic: No way would I want a vehicle on a Carfax that has been repaired.

The car accident attorney will defend your rights and legal aspects of the matter to your interests. You might deserve more than what the insurance company want to offering you.

I said attorney if the other guy is at fault. It sounds like you injured your knee. I wasn't meant to rile anyone. A lot of folks come on here with the pictures ,of their wrecked trucks, due to motor vehicle accidents. I hope they are just as concerned with their well being as well as their beloved taco.
