Hey TW, the first 6 hours into 2024 I rolled my truck. It makes me sad, after putting so much time, money and effort into it, as it was my basically a family member. Did well to protect me and my father, and came out with minimal injury. Should I buy it back and part out to gain some money back? Or should I just accept the loss and move on? I doubt insure payout will be high, and 1st gens in CA are ridiculously expensive.

You can only close one eye at a time when driving home drunk from a New Year party. Close both and this is what happens.

    Damn
Shitty way to start off year
    Glad u and Dad OK

imo, I wouldn’t even need to write an estimate for my insurance company
    Technical term is OTL
    Obvious Total Loss

    here is the kicker though
It’s the salvage value that counts

I.E. bc these tacos are so popular, rolled over or blasted in front end….salvage value will be HIGH
Again, IMO, your truck as it sits in tow lot crashed, would get 40-50% of the Actual Cash Value of the truck a moment before the crash occurred
Therefore, if you ‘buy back’ or ‘owner retain salvage’
The number will be grossly under the number you expect if you keep the vehicle

let’s say truck is worth $10k
The insurance company can sell for $5k at copart/IAA salvage auction

just make sure ins company correctly gives you comparables to your exact truck to get you correct ACV
You will get a ’report’ From said ins company
Many times they compare your truck to lower models and try to pay you less
    Just read it carefully
On the other hand, the ins comp might just give you a ACV that you absolutely love

Wait and see what they offer you. Last summer a distracted driver rear ended my son at a traffic light and totaled his 09 Honda. He paid $2500 for it 3 years earlier and had put another 100,000 miles on it. Insurance paid him $7500.

That was the good news. The bad news, he had to end up paying $10,000 for something to replace it.

No alcohol or drugs involved, it couldve been way worse if that was the case whether it was from injuring myself, my dad, or even killing someone.

Yup fully insured, it was super foggy this morning and a super sharp turn snuck up on us, and there was no correcting to pull off saving it.

Thanks! That really helps, and I appreciate it.

I am expecting to just move on with the money at this point and buy another truck.

    Pretty much what he said

BUT ... know insurance co. Is NOT your friend here. Their estimate WILL be low balled. DO NOT be tricked into cashing a "partial" check that can (and will) be legal full payment.

Get any and every high price recent sales YOURSELF bringatrailer.com ect... There are even spacific related auto appraisers you can hire. A coulpe hundred would easily return a couple thousand.. buybacks are usually worth doing

Hope no alcohol was involved for the insurance recovery purpose. Glad all are ok. Not sure where you live but my son is looking for a doner 4x4 to convert with. Cash. P.m. me if you go this route

    Good luck
