This especially due to the corrosiveness and the unknown of the substance.

A comment on the insurance. I've written total losses on several vehicles with engine compartment only damage. If the salvage value plus the repair cost is greater than replacement cost the vehicle gets replaced. Consider what all those perfect panels, components, headlights, axels etc are worth these days. That was probably a $25k+ salvage bid. So $25k salvage + $20k repair means a $45k or less vehicle is a total loss.

When parts are super hard to come by (like early in a new generation) engine damage easily totals vehicles. I imagine parts these days are at a premium.

Thank you guys for all the input. It's definitely been an eye opening experience no doubt. I'm grateful my insurance had my back. Definitely going to look at the locking fuel door mod. Got the Stant already for the new truck.

I'm good with fking someone up for it for sure.

If ever in that situation here are three thoughts of wisdom.

Holy crap. I have done insurance claims 20 plus years. I never seen this bad of engine damage. Someone knew how to screw with your truck.

Most people think sugar in the tank is the way to go. We had a jar of fuel with sugar in our office sitting for years and the sugar never dissolved. Believe it or not Diet Coke really does the job at screwing things up. Great point made about insurance company totaling it because they don’t want to be married to it. Even if they replace the motor and other items, if anything else goes wrong they will be on the hook. I hate to think someone targeted you to take the time to use a product to mess the truck up like this. Hope it never happens again.

Can't help you with your question...but I have tried the locking gas cap from Advance Auto & Autozone and both caused Check Engine Light (CEL) to come on.

I bought one from Napa and installed it yesterday...because I can't seem to find an O'Reilly's around these parts...in Delaware.

If the Napa model gives me CEL I'll have to order the Stant locking cap.

If you decide to move forward with a fuel filter, take a look at some foreign Hilux or Prado vehicles. They will have properly designed systems that can likely be adapted to the Taco.

Heck, maybe a North American model would have something.

That's super interesting, and figures! It might have been already said in this thread, but any idea on what the OP will get paid out?

Years ago when I lived in a really sketchy area I installed a locking gas cap on an old Honda Accord I owned. I lost the key to the cap and I can honestly say, it was a huge pain in the ass to remove with just tools and no key.
IMO, a name brand, non-counterfeit locking cap is prob all you’ll ever need and installing a locking fuel door seems like overkill and a lot of extra work (especially considering that those locking doors can be pried open more easily than opening a locked gas cap)

there should be an inline fuel filter below the truck somewhere.

edit: it appears the only fuel filter is inside the tank as part of the fuel pump assembly...that's dumb...

That looks like burnt sugar or Karo corn syrup on top of that piston. The rest of the damage looks salt-related. No filter will make it 100% safe. Get a locking gas cap and move on with your life to worry about something else. They can't remove a locking gas cap without damaging it and its feel. The damage and feel of you removing it becoming self-evident and noticeable. I bought a locking gas cap and I don't worry anymore. No codes thrown with my Stant. BE SURE to lubricate the viton o-ring on the cap with some petroleum jelly every 3-4 months. This helps to not throw codes.

I had the same issue with every cap I got from ebay or Advance auto parts. I had to just buy it online from O'Riley's and have it shipped to me. There are no stores around me in PA either. I just added a few extra items I would have bought later anyway to get my total over $35 so the shipping was free.

Anyone have experience with the locking gas caps in sub-freezing temps?
My tailgate lock freezes up all the time in winter, looking into a locking cap but wondering if I could be left stranded at the gas pump with a frozen lock?

Lock de-icer works but that stuff leaks everywhere inside the lock and I would hate to have that stuff somehow get in the gas. ?

To answer your basic question - no, the Fuel filter is in the tank itself. If you want to replace the filter you have to replace the pump. I know where you're coming from, I used to replace my old mazda's in line filter.

You MIGHT be able to add your own somewhere. It will make the pump work more than it's spec'd for, most likely.
