I got rear ended the other day, two weeks out of the dealership
2018 certified pre owned 32k miles on it.
Obvious bumper and tailgate damage in addition tailpipe yanked down and wrapped tightly around rear wheel.
Adjuster coming out in a couple days and the guys at tow yard/body shop said he’s not particularly thorough and sometimes underestimates in their opinion.

does anyone have advice on what to make sure he evaluates re:frame etc.
Thanks so much , I use my truck as a hauler for a living and can’t risk making it more vulnerable to damage later

    Stock for now!!
Take it to a reputable body-shop! The adjuster will under value the inspection, just had this happen to me with my '22. Adjuster said it was 6k and my body-shop supplemented another 12k to the claim.

Looks like you could have Whiplash after that collision. You should have your Dr look you over. That's what i'd request !!

Why is there so much grass on everything? I would check the frame and the trailer hitch. It looks like the hitch probably took most of the impact and prevented more damage.

Is it just the optics or is that front passenger tire cockeyed too? Take it to a reputable body shop and have them look at it. It appears the other car slid under the rear of the truck, so all the force wasn't transmitted to the hitch and frame. Hopefully they can pop a new bed, tailgate and bumper and you're good to go.

^^ This. Go to a reputable body shop you trust and let them deal with the adjuster. If they find more damage once they have it apart they will contact the adjuster on your behalf and get a supplement authorized. Telling the adjuster what to look for will not help your case. No one likes to be told how to do their job.

Differential looks caved in - the rear axle is shot too. I’d really check the frame, especially where the leaf packs mount to it.

The drive shaft probably transferred the shock of the hit forward too- are the shaft and bearings OK? Also check the tranny…

Sadly, it very likely is a write-off. This is my '18 from January of this year:

A hit in the hitch seems to almost guarantee frame damage with our trucks, and Toyota doesn't recognize frame repair, only replacement. They were going to put a new frame on my truck, at a cost of >$30K, but the frame itself was a minimum of a year out, so they totaled it.

Beyond the obvious body parts - frame, rear diff (to include pinion and all operation), drive shaft, Trans output shaft - basically walk the driveline up from the rear.

I got rear ended in my 89. I was stopped. The car that hit me was doing ~55. I had to use the bottle jack to peel the bumper away from the tire, change the tire and drove it home but you could tell the rear diff was messed up. Pretty sure the bumper being pushed so hard into the curb drive tire tweaked the entire rear end and the pinion ended up bent as shock went forward from the hit. Basically - I put it to the floor, stepped off the clutch and heard it pop because it was causing my truck to lurch as it tried to spin. Had to use 4wd/Front wheels to get around for 2 weeks before the ins totaled it.

Take it to a good shop and they will take care of necessary supplements. I deal with adjusters all the time. What carrier do you have? Hopefully not Allstate because you are not in good hands with them. The rest are actually pretty easy going.

Find a shop you are comfortable with. This is your truck not theirs. Unfortunately some adjuster feel as the middle man trying to please both. The reality is they work for you. Body shops will apply supplements accordingly. Personally with used parts like body panels I want OEM, do not care if its used and been repainted, I do not like aftermarket as the fitment is shit.

Adjusters have to act in good faith and repair the damage and most do, some just hate their job and are awful to work with. Ive been on a few roofs for them with very noticeable damage and they want to get a monocle out and look at the damage, no joke I am serious. Some would take my word and write the estimate without photos and have it written up by the time I am down. Good and bad like every job but Adjuster really get a bad name thinking they are there to deny a claim with is so far from the truth people just assume it.
