....around welds. After 1 Illinois winter I have little spots of surface rust on some of the welds. (very minor and I want to keep it that way!!) Any favorite paints anyone using?

Rustoleum black works as well as most...just gotta wire brush any rust away best as possible, and then use rustoleum rust reformer to cover the bare surface before applying their paint. After all is dry...hit it with crc or cosmoline.

Without seeing it, if actually rust?...if not, probably just paint, and a rust inhibitor like crc or cosmoline after.

I think these frames are even worse than the previous generations. Looked at a 2018 at the dealership in New York it only had 7000 miles on it. I believe it was parked in the ocean when it wasn’t driven.

Zoo It is ONLY on the welded area on the drivers side under the front door. I'll clean her up -spray some black Rustoleum and hit it with FF.

R-O Rust Reformer is designed to react with iron oxides, not bare metal. Remove loose rust only, then apply Rust Reformer. Top coat with R-O Professional Enamel (silver can at The Home Depot). I was a R-O sales rep in a previous life.

I've found 2 ways to prevent rust on welds.

    Sandblasting before primer & paint.

Or wire wheel then smear por15 patch over the weld, let it cure then prime & paint.

I think most seam sealers would work, I just like the squeeze tube the por 15 comes in.

Wouldn't know its my first tacoma. All i can comment being in connecticut with plenty of salt use on roads here throughout winter all i noticed was the entire undercarriage was well painted in black....really nothing else i could tell was done to prevent rust. I hosed the frame down well on a hot day, and when good and dry, i sprayed it down fairly well with cosmoline rp-342. After the first snowy salty winter i inspected the job i did last summer. Looked like it was just done, big improvement from using fluid film on my tundra every year. There's a reason bmw, and mercedes use cosmoline...it lasts.
Getting back to the ocean...saw a picture of a tundra in boston, badly rusted. Looked like it sat in boston harbor for years.

I noticed the same on my truck on a couple welded places...just made sure i cleaned them well and coated them twice over with cosmoline. I don't think its actually rust. Didn't appear any change since i did the chassis last summer.

I have Fluid Film on the wheel well parts of the frame but stopped short of this area. FF did well, but it did wash off in heavy rain storm in certain areas.
To recoat everything with Cosmoline how should I clean FF off?

Just get the black Cosmoline and spray it over everything. That stuff isn't moving. The FF is probably mostly gone if it's been any time.

Probably need to power wash it off. Imo, fluid film is better suited for encapsulating surface rust if the case.

Trouble i found spraying cosmoline on a surface that has any amount of fluid film on it, you get a drippy mess that doesn't seem to dry.....same when spraying ff over cosmoline. Best to use one or the other, but never both together.
