Remember -- it's not a race but a challenge. Train when you can and good luck out there!

Depends on where it is. If you know it is going to be in a hilly/mountainous area, start running on hills. Both my races were on hills and they destroyed me more than the obstacles. Otherwise any sort of upper body weight lifting will help you just fine. Also get some burpee work in because they suck.

A co-worker of mine just finished the Spartan Beast at Mt. Killington last weekend and he said it was the hardest race he's ever done. It was 13 miles and took him 7 hours (and it's in pretty damn good shape and been training all summer for it). He made a training circuit in his back yard that consists of a 1/2 mile run littered with weight/rock carries, squats with a concrete filled pipe, log splitting with an axe (or cutting at an old stump works), chin ups, rope climbs and good old hill sprints. The Spartan races are tough because if you miss an obstacle, you do burpees as a penalty. They also don't really give you anything such as water or food. In his 13 mile race, they had 2 water stops. There are memory sections so bring a sharpee and write down what they tell you somewhere concealed. The course creator said his idea behind the race my co-worker just ran was get the racers wet at the bottom of every climb and then have an obstacle at the top that required heavy upper body (like 7' walls). IMO, the Spartan race of the same distance as the Mudder is a lot more difficult. Some of the shorter Spartan races aren't that bad and there are some Spartan road races. I'm not sure which one you are considering.

well this sucks. i have my wife signed up as a spectator for TM in 2 days, but she isn't able to stand or walk around for more than about 10 minutes at a time due to serious back injury at work, and spectator tickets are non transferable.

I was going to do this also. but to prepare for it would be too distracting to my school obligations. There is another one in April. I will be doing that one for sure.

Yeah the one i was considering is a "Beast" also. I was going to start training for it but realized shortly that preparing for this would take away from my school efforts. Im shooting for the one in April (Beast)

i finished seattle TM with no training (not counting beer curls). it took me just over 3 hours to do it. i was wearing my vibrams for it, and bruised the arch of my left foot about 2 miles in, so i compensated by putting more into my right leg. my left foot is sore today when i walk on it, and my right quad and calf are sore to walk on, and pretty horrible to walk down stairs with right now. it was a fun time, but a hell of a workout for me. now i know more of what to look for next year when i do this again, but with a team.

Did Tough Mudder Utah 2012 on 10/13, it was amazing! Had a nice sized team from our company
    [IMG]

Victory after eating shit during the last obstacle. I literally blacked out in Electroshock Therapy and face planted right into ground, woke up between the obstacle and the finish arch with a terrible headache, had no idea what happened, felt like my jaw was broken, and my nose and mouth were full of mud
    [IMG]
No training, took about 4 hours helping out our team and other mudders through the course. No bypasses, only complaints were the log carry (I'll go solo next time) and almost getting killed by Electroshock Therapy
Very happy with my clothing choices and my shoes (Inov-8 Roclite 315 $80) were amazing, zero blisters with normal nike ankle socks though the $20 Wilson football gloves from target almost cost me to fall on the Funky Monkey bars, and were thrown away due to splitting seams, i'd buy a pair for next time.

Tri-state completed! Had a great time and it was definitely a different experience from the spartan races I did. I dug the team work atmosphere and made sure we ran it that way rather than just pushing myself for a good finish time. A lot of the obstacles were a bit more mentally challenging (like the ones that went underground since I get a bit claustrophobic sometimes) but definitely had a lot of fun. I only was unable to do the stepping posts and the balance beam. May do it again next year with the g/f. I just hate how even the early bird is $90.

Congrats!! Did you go on Saturday or Sunday?

Saturday's crowd was the biggest they ever had at a single event!

We were there Saturday but our heat time was at 8:40 thank god. I saw the pictures on facebook at how crowded some things were later in the day and I was so glad I went early. One of my favorite parts was when a guy in a clown suit was struggling to make it up one of the big hills on the first dirtbike track and everyone was screaming "clown, clown, clown!" and cheered when he made it up it.

i thought it seems a bit expensive as well, but when you look at all the materials used to build everything, the price becomes a bit justified. Everest takes something like 3 tons of plywood alone, and i think they said something like 80 hours to build. all the hours put in by staff to build the obstacles, rental equipment, and materials add up to quite a large dollar figure.
