Okay, here's an answer from a non Kool-Aide drinker. I towed over 6000 miles on a trip last summer with my Tacoma TRD OR. In Canada, to get the "tow package", it is required to get the "off road" package, which many on this site tell me is not for off roading. Well, I'm here to tell you the lack of Tow/ Haul sucks. I absolutely hated towing on anything other than flat ground. The biggest piss-off of the whole experience, was that I was able to either control the gears, or use cruise control. If 3rd is selected for power or engine braking reasons, cruise control is not an option. Now before the know-it-alls chime in and say cruise should not be used while towing, it is a much more relaxed safer way to tow, especially when covering 6000 miles.
Here's the rub; I have sub leased my TRD OR to someone else, and now have and different brand of truck which is rated to tow 1000# less, but has a 6 speed, tow/haul, range select, and manuall gear select. Cruise control works in all gears, and automatically engine brakes, no need to even bother shifting manually. It also NEVER hunts, and uses all 6 forward gears. Look elsewhere my friend, I swore, and swore, and swore that I would never take a long road-trip with the Taco again. It was that irritating. Without naming what I have now, it is a pleasure, turn on tow haul, set the cruise, and enjoy the fact that I now run lower RPM, get better mileage, it's quieter, and I doubt I'll come home with a transmission leak, or a whining rear diff. All for $10K less than the Taco, jeebus.

Not to mention he's incorrect about only the Offroad having the tow package in Canada , either TRD model comes with it

Towed this trailer this weekend. Heavy Duty Steel Trailer loaded with 2 ATV's, cooler, two 50 gallon water tanks, a little bit of fire wood, and a full tool box came in around 4000-4300lbs. I'm in Florida, so I didn't have to worry about hills. I did have to pull it through some soft sugar sand for about 100 yards. Other than putting it in 4hi for the soft stuff getting to camp, I had no problems...

Can you guys get a plain old SR5 with the tow package in Canada or does it only come with one of the TRD packages?

Mine is the SR5 and it came standard with the up graded alternator and battery, trd suspension and prewired for the harness. No hitch or 7 pin was at the rear and no tranny cooler. I installed that after, very easy and toyota put on a cooler ( aftermarket and larger) when i bought it.
